CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina fell to 17
th-ranked Charlotte 2-1 in double overtime in a match of nationally-ranked programs.
The Chanticleers held a 1-0 lead late in the game, but Preston Popp was able to score on a double-assist from Cooper Nugent and Teddy Chaouche with less than five minutes left in regulation to even the score at one.
In the first overtime, neither team's offense got going as both teams only took one shot. In the second overtime, CCU's
Morten Timm took a shot that Charlotte goalkeeper Elliott Panicco made a nice stop and was able to get the save out quick. From there Chaouche was able to knock in the match-winner on and assist from Kameron Lacey just 30 seconds after Timm's shot on goal.
Charlotte outshot CCU 15-8 and 6-3 in shots on goal. The Chanticleers had one more corner kick than the 49ers (7-6) but were whistled for 21 fouls compared to 10 on Charlotte.
Alberto Ciroi, the reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, had another outstanding game in goal for the Chants with four saves.
In the first half CCU took a late lead as
Danny Cabrera was able to rebound a missed shot from
DZ Harmon to give the Chants a 1-0 just seconds before the end of the first half.
It was a half in which the defense of both teams kept the offenses from getting anything done until Cabrera's goal. Each team only managed three shots in the opening 45 minutes with two shots being on goal for Charlotte and the one for CCU.
The aggressiveness of the defenses showed in the fouls column as a total of 13 fouls were called in the first half.
