Game Notes
CONWAY – After taking an extended holiday break, the Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team will be back in action this Thursday, Jan. 2, when the Chanticleers host Georgia Southern at 7 p.m.
The Chants opened Sun Belt play on the road at Troy and South Alabama prior to the holiday break, making Thursday night's game with the Eagles the Sun Belt home opener. The game is the first of three consecutive home conference games in which the Chants will also host Georgia State (Jan. 4) and ULM (Jan. 6).
Even though CCU lost at Troy to open conference action on Dec. 19, the Chants bounced back to play one of their most complete games in an 81-69 win at South Alabama, who was the preseason pick to win the conference, just two days later.
CCU (8-5/1-1 SBC) enters the game winners of four of its last five and seven of its last 10 games.
While the Chants own at 5-3 edge in the overall series, Georgia Southern (8-5/2-0 SBC) has defeated CCU in each of the past two meetings. Since CCU joined the Sun Belt the Eagles have won three of the four meetings between the two.
The game will be between two of the top offensive teams in the conference. CCU is averaging a conference-leading 82 points per game. The Eagles are not that far behind as they are third in the SBC with an average of 78.2 points per game.
CCU will bring a solid and balanced scoring attack into the game with four players averaging over 14 points per game. Keishawn Brewton (14.9) leads that trio followed by DeVante' Jones (14.8) and Tyrell Gumbs-Frater (14.2).
Tommy Burton is the fourth Chant to reach double-digit scoring entering the contest at 10.6 points per game. He is coming off a career night at South Alabama where the senior set career-highs in both scoring (19) and rebounding (12).
Georgia Southern will also bring a balanced scoring team into the HTC Center with four of its top scorers in double digits. All-Sun Belt performer Ike Smith is back and leads the Eagles at 16.1 points per game. Isaiah Crawley and Elijah McCadden both average 13.4 points per game while Quan Jackson averages 10.2.
The Eagles (8-5/2-0 SBC) are tied at the top of the conference standings after the first weekend of games after defeating Texas State (67-64) and UTA (77-74) at home in the month of December.
