CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team will begin its 2020 season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at nationally-ranked Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Chanticleers enter the season just being named the most improved NCAA Division I men's tennis program by the University Sports Program.
The Chants are entering their 16th season under head coach
Chris Powers who was named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year last season. CCU added former Chant
Luiz Faria as an assistant student coach this season. Faria was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year at the No. 1 position after going 5-0 in conference play last year for CCU.
This year's team will be an experienced one with five seniors and two juniors.
Coastal is returning seven student-athletes from last season's squad, including seniors
Gonzalo Achondo,
Francesco Cori,
Pyry Hyrkkonen,
Joel Popov, and
Zak Talic, and juniors
Juan Castellanos and
Daiki Tanabe.
The Demon Deacons enter the season as the No. 7 ranked team in the ITA's first release of national rankings for the 2020 season. Wake Forest is coming off an ACC championship and an NCAA runner-up finish in the 2019 season. The Deacs also had a runner-up finish in the National Team Indoor Championships.
