Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse improved to 2-0 for first time in four years

Buies Creek, N.C. – Senior Samantha Courtemanche recorded six goals and two assists to lead the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team to a 14-13 come-from-behind victory over former Big South foe Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. late Wednesday afternoon. CCU improved to 2-0 on the season while the Fighting Camels remain winless at 0-2.

The Chanticleers outshot the host team 32-25 for the contest, including a slim 15-14 advantage in the first period.

In an evenly played match, both teams recorded 14 ground balls, 13 turnovers, and five free position shots each. Campbell held a slight advantage in draw controls at 15-14 while Coastal caused seven turnovers compared to five for the Camels.

Courtemanche led the CCU offense with eight points while Lauren Cremen recorded her first collegiate hat-trick with three goals. Fellow Chant Megan Busch added two goals while Lyla Robinson, Megan Bozzi, and Hannah Close chipped in one goal each in the road win.

For Campbell, Julianna Sanchez led the way with five tallies, while Laura Will added two goals and two assists. Mackenzie Kolesar also recorded two goals for the host team.

CCU's Bozzi opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season as the Chants took the early 1-0 lead with 28:29 left in the opening stanza before the Camels answered with four goals capped by a Shania Roehrick goal with 24:38 left until the intermission.

Coastal answered with a four-goal run of its own as Courtemanche (20:22, 15:25) sandwiched goals by Close (19:16) and Robinson (16:04) to give the Chanticleers a 5-4 advantage in the first half of play.

Campbell would close the first half with a 3-1 surge for the 7-6 advantage at the break, with Will's second goal of the day capping the run with 26 second left on the clock.

The Chanticleers opened the second half action with a 5-1 advantage as Courtemanche (25:33, 22:50, 22:03) and Cremen (29:03, 21:29) flexed their muscles to put the Chants out front for good at 11-8.

The Fighting Camels would answer with a 5-3 run to close the match as Kolesar and Sanchez put the host team with the opportunity to even the contest.

CCU's Regan McComb won her second-consecutive game in as many starts making 10 saves in goal.

Coastal Carolina will continue its season-opening road trip as it will travel to Temple on Saturday, Feb. 22. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
