CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina indoor track and field team will be in action on Monday at the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
This season featured many new faces to go along with the cast of veterans. As a team, Coastal Carolina had 17 athletes in the top 20 of the Sun Belt standings in 14 track and field events during the indoor season.
Freshman Melissa Jefferson made the biggest splash to the team this season as she picked up the first Chanticleer Sun Belt Track Athlete of the Week since 2017 after earning a win the 60-meter dash on January 25 at the Liberty Kickoff. Just a couple of weeks later, the freshman sprinter picked up her second event win of the year in the 200-meter dash at last weekend's VMI Indoor Classic.
Senior Hesmari Coetzee kicked off the season at the Gamecock Opener in the 400 meters. The Chanticleer veteran finished with the fifth-best time in the school history, marking 56.27.
Just last week at the VMI Indoor Classic, junior Mya Ray earned the 10th-best time in school history in the 500 meters with a time of 1:20.97.
In the high jump this season, freshman Kadasia Evans was the leading Coastal finisher as she earned the fourth-best mark in school history of 1.65 meters at the Liberty Kickoff.
The championship action starts at the Birmingham Crossplex on Monday at 9:00 and will run through Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. with the awards presentation.
