CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina softball team dropped to 13-6 overall and 1-1 in Sun Belt Conference play with a 5-0 loss to the No. 8 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday afternoon at St. John Stadium.
The two starters for each of the respective squads, Kaitlin Beasley-Polko of Coastal and Summer Ellyson of Louisiana, worked two scoreless frames apiece to start the day, but in the top of the third, the Cajun bats came alive as they chased the CCU starter from the game with two walks, a Kaitlyn Alderink double, and a triple from Raina O'neal, giving their team a 4-0 lead.
Just like Friday, the Chant coaching staff went to Ally Marcano in relief, but unlike the previous day, the Middletown, N.Y., native entered with the bases loaded and one out. The senior wasn't as sharp as she was in game one of the series as she allowed three walks and a run before getting the final two outs of the top of the third.
Coastal Carolina threatened Ellyson's shutout bid in the bottom of the third as freshman Mary Sobataka worked a leadoff walk and a single into center field by junior Makiya Thomas. With runners on first and second with no outs, Ellyson would get the next batter, junior Stavi Augur, to pop out to the second baseman Alderink. The Louisiana defense helped their starting pitcher get out of the jam with an inning-ending ground ball double play on junior Courtney Dean's sharp grounder to shortstop Alyssa Dalton.
Lafayette's Julie Rawls hit her fourth home run of the season in the top of the fifth, as it was all the cushion Ellyson would need to pick up her tenth win of the year.
In the win, Ellyson pitched her sixth complete game of the season, allowing three hits, four strikeouts on 94 pitches.
Beasley-Polko drops to 4-4 on the season as she worked 2.1 innings, allowed three hits, and gave up four runs.
The two teams will face off in the rubber game of the series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
