
Eight Chants Named to 2010-19 Big South Women’s Indoor Track & Field All-Decade Team

Big South Conference announced its 2010s All-Decade Team
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced the 2010-19 Women's Indoor Track & Field All-Decade Team presented by Hercules Tires on Tuesday afternoon. A total of eight former Chanticleers were selected to the team in Ikeiylah Brown, Jessica Gelibert, Darriale Henley, Erica Peake, Letitia Saayman, Amirah Al-Bayyinah, Kierra Gabe, and Latesha "Teka" Simpson.

The league's All-Decade Teams were first unveiled as part of the Big South's 30th Anniversary celebration in 2013-14 to recognize the student-athletes and coaches who excelled in their respective sport in each decade since the conference's founding in 1983.

Brown was a seven-time All-Big South performer and a five-time Big South Champion during her indoor career at CCU. She was the Big South Champion in the 60-meters, 200-meters, and part of the 4x400-meter relay team in 2010, after winning the 200-meters individual championship in 2009 and the 60-meters in 2008. She earned all-conference recognition in both the 60-meters and the 200-meters three times (2008, 2009, and 2010) and the 4x400 meters in 2010.

Gelibert was named the 2015 Big South Indoor Track & Field Most Outstanding Track Performer and the 2013 Big South Freshman of the Year. She was a six-time Big South Champion and an eight-time all-conference selection. Gelibert was a three-time Big South Champion in 2015, winning the 400-meters, 60-meter hurdles, and was part of the 4x400-championship relay team. She was also a conference champion in the 4x400-meter relay in 2014 and both the 400-meters and the 4x400-meter relay in 2013. She earned all-conference accolades in the 400-meters and 4x400-meter relay three times each (2013, 2014, and 2015) and twice in the 60-meter hurdles (2013 and 2015). She still holds the indoor track and field school record in the 500-meters at 1:12.66 and is second in the 400-meters at 54.86.

Henley was a four-time individual Big South Champion in indoors, winning the 60-meter dash in 2009, 2011, and 2012, and the long jump in 2010. She was also a six-time All-Big South performer, earning all-conference accolades in the 60-meters in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, and the long jump in 2010 and 2011.

Peake was a second-team All-American in the 200-meters in 2013, as she finished ninth at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. She was named the 2013 Big South Indoor Track & Field Most Outstanding Track Performer and was a five-time Big South Champion in indoors. Peake won the 60-meters, 200-meters, long jump, and the 4x400-meter relay championships in 2013 and the 200-meters in 2011. She earned all-conference honors eight times, three-times in the 200-meters (2011, 2012, and 2013), twice in both the 60-meters (2012 and 2013) and the 4x400-meter relay (2012 and 2013), and once in the long jump (2013). She still holds CCU's indoor school record in the 60-meters (7.35) and 200-meters (23.40), both Big South records, and in the 300-meters (38.89). She is also second all-time in the long jump (5.86 meters) in CCU indoor track and field history.

Saayman was a two-time Big South Champion in the 5,000-meters, winning the distance event at the conference championships in both 2014 and 2015. She was also a seven-time all-conference performer, garnering accolades in the 5,000-meters three times (2012, 2014, and 2015), the 3,000-meters twice (2013 and 2015), and the distance medley relay twice (2012 and 2015). She still ranks third in CCU's indoor history in both the 3,000-meters (9:38.83) and 5,000-meters (16:52.74). She was named to the Big South 2010-19 Women's Cross Country All-Decade Team earlier this summer.

Al-Bayyinah was named the 2015 Big South Indoor Track & Field Most Outstanding Field Performer and was a three-time Big South individual champion with medalist honors in the triple jump in both 2014 and 2015, and the long jump in 2015. She was a four-time All-Big South pick overall, earning all-conference honors in the triple jump in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and the long jump in 2015. She still ranks second in CCU's indoor record books in the triple jump at 12.75 meters.

Gabe was a two-time Big South Most Outstanding Field Performer (2011 and 2012) and a four-time Big South Champion. She won the individual conference title in the high jump in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and the triple jump in 2012. With her championship wins, she also earned all-conference honors four times, three times in the high jump, and once in the triple jump. She still holds the indoor school record in the high jump at 1.73 meters, which is also tied for the Big South Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship meet record.

Simpson was the Big South Women's Indoor Track & Field champion in the high jump in 2015 and a nine-time All-Big South performer. She received all-conference recognition in the high jump three-times (2013, 2014, and 2015), long jump three times (2014, 2015, and 2016), 200-meters twice (2015 and 2016), and 60-meter dash once (2015).

Coastal Carolina had a total of seven student-athletes named to the 1997-99 Women's Indoor Track & Field All-Decade Team in Shashonda Lane (two-time all-conference – 60-meter hurdles; Big South Champion, five-time all-conference – long jump, triple jump), Angela Murphy (Big South Champion, two-time all-conference – 800-meters, mile), Laurie Occhipinti (Big South Champion, two-time all-conference – 5,000-meters, 3,000-meters), Jolene Williams (All-American, six-time Big South Champion, six-time all-conference – mile, 3,000-meters, 5,000-meters), April Cook (all-conference – high jump), Danielle Leyh (all-conference – high jump), and Liz Pidgeon (three-time Big South Champion, four-time all-conference – weight throw, shot put).

The Chanticleers put 11 on the 2000-09 All-Decade Team in Chasity Johnson (three-time Big South Champion, seven-time all-conference – 200-meters, 60-meters and All-American, seven-time Big South Champion, nine-time all-conference – triple jump, long jump, high jump), LeAuna Sistrunk (two-time Big South Champion, four-time all-conference – hurdles), Amber White (two-time Big South Champion, four-time all-conference – 200-meters, 400-meters), Kara Koppel (Big South Champion, five-time all-conference – 3,000-meters, 5,000-meters, mile), Felicitas Mensing (three-time Big South Champion, five-time all-conference – 3,000-meters, 5,000-meters, mile), Anne Marie Moutsinga (six-time Big South Champion, nine-time all-conference – 3,000-meters, 5,000-meters, mile), Courtney Samuel (five-time Big South Champion, nine-time all-conference – triple jump, high jump, long jump), Marilyn Testa (two-time Big South Champion, three-time all-conference – pole vault), Amber Campbell (three-time All-American, seven-time Big South Champion, eight-time all-conference – weight throw, shot put), and coach Alan Connie (five Big South Championships (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009) and a seven-time Big South Coach of the Year).

A 15-person committee of Big South Conference administrators served as the official voting panel to determine the All-Decade Team, with fan voting comprising 20 percent of the overall total.Â

About the Big South All-Decade Teams
Women's Indoor Track & Field All-Decade Team candidates were determined based on being at least one of the following:
1) Was a multiple all-conference honoree;
2) Was named an All-American;
3) Is a member of the Big South Conference Hall of Fame;
4) Student-athletes must be a college graduate or left their respective institution in good academic standing;
5) Won a conference championship as a coach and/or was voted conference Coach of the Year;
6) Players of the Year, Tournament MVPs, and first-team all-conference honorees will be among the candidate pool for the 2010-19 All-Decade Teams.Â

Candidates that participated in two different decades were placed in a specific decade based on consultation from member institutions. Member institutions also had final determination in regards to the inclusion of student-athletes and coaches.
