Women’s Lacrosse Names 2021 Team Captains

Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse roster full of experience for 2021

CONWAY, S.C. – Sixth-year head coach Kristen Selvage and the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team are excited to announce the program's 2021 team captains in Avery Drouin, Anya McSorley, and Abbey Buchanan.

"We are thrilled to announce our captains for the 2021 Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse season.  Avery Drouin, Anya McSorley, and Abbey Buchanan have shown themselves to be exceptional leaders. These three women have dedicated all of themselves to building and leading this program. As new challenges have arisen, they have continued to shine as leaders in the face of adversity; they have never wavered," stated coach Selvage. "We are very proud of them and know that they will not only help us to grow but they will help us combine our success with chemistry. Our coaching staff feels a confidence in their decision making and comfort in knowing that they will bring excellence each and every day."

Drouin was one of three captains on last year's squad while both McSorley and Buchanan will be in their fifth seasons for the Chants in 2021.

Named to the 2020 ASUN Women's Lacrosse Preseason watch list, Drouin played in two games in the shortened 2020 season, posting one shot, picking up one ground ball, winning one draw control, and causing one turnover on the year.

After earning MAAC All-Rookie team honors in 2018 at Quinnipiac, the New Hampshire native appeared in 18 games, making five starts in the midfield in 2019 for the Chants after transferring in. In her first season as Chant in 2019, the now-senior found the back of the net four times, including the game-winner against Kennesaw State, and assisted on four other CCU goals for eight points. She also won 12 draw controls while gathering 10 ground balls and causing two turnovers.

Now a redshirt senior, McSorley will be a leader on the defensive side of the field for the Chants once again in 2021. One of the most experienced returners on the roster this season, McSorley played in and started all five games on defense in the shortened season last spring where she was tied for second on the team with nine ground balls. She also caused two turnovers and won one draw control.

For her career, the Maryland native has played in 27 matches, including starting 21 contests, and has recorded 36 ground balls, caused 17 turnovers, and won four draw controls.

Having graduated in May 2020 with her bachelor's degree in public health, Buchanan elected to use her additional year of eligibility and returned to the Teal turf in 2021. Last season as a senior, the Massachusetts native played in and started all five games on the shortened season, tallying four points on four goals on the year. She recorded six shots on the season, putting all six on goal, won three draw controls, and caused five turnovers from her midfield position. She scored two goals, including the game-winning goal in the season-opening road win at Old Dominion, and also registered a goal at nationally-ranked Colorado and nationally-ranked Denver prior to the season being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

For her career at CCU, Buchanan has played in netted 12 goals and two assists for a total of 14 points over 39 matches. She has also recorded a .947 shots on goal percentage, scooped up 18 ground balls, caused 12 turnovers, and won 10 draw controls.

The Chanticleers will open up their 2021 slate in early February. A full spring schedule will be released at a later date.
