CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team will open up the 2021 spring season with a pair of home matches at the Stevens Tennis Complex versus regional opponent UNCW on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and Kennesaw State, on Sunday, Feb. 21.
Last season, the Chants were 5-3 overall and were getting ready to start Sun Belt Conference play when the season was abruptly canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Looking to pick up where they left off a year ago, head coach
Chris Powers' squad returns a handful of experienced players in
Gonzalo Achondo, Pyry Hyrkkonen, and
Daiki Tanabe as well as returning seniors
Juan Castellanos and
Francesco Cori.
The Chants have added even more experience this season with the addition of transfers
Diego Giraldo, Bastien Huon, and
Neil O'Connor and welcome one newcomer to the lineup in freshman
Guilherme Toresan.
The Seahawks enter the match with a 0-1 record having dropped a match to in-state foe Duke 7-0 on Jan. 31.
Kennesaw State enters the match with a 1-2 record on the year with a win coming against Jacksonville State on Feb. 7. Prior to Friday's match at CCU, the Owls will play UNCW on Feb. 18. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Chants and Owls on the hard court.
Fans will be allowed.
Health and safety protocols for attendance will remain in place to include, but not limited to:
- Face coverings WILL BE required.
- Maintain physical and social distancing at all times.
- NO congregating between individuals or groups outside of your affiliated party.
- NO interaction with student-athletes and coaches at any time.
Coastal Carolina University and the Department of Athletics is committed to providing a safe environment for the enjoyment of our patrons that attend our home intercollegiate athletic events. Individuals that disregard health and safety protocols may be asked to leave.
