Coastal Carolina Women’s Basketball Returns to Action

Chanticleers to host South Alabama this weekend at The HTC Center

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team will return to The HTC Center this weekend after a 14-day hiatus as the Chanticleers host South Alabama in a Sun Belt Conference two-game series.  The opening game will tip-off at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 6, with the second game tipping off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 7.

Coastal (3-7, 0-6 SBC), having its last three games postponed due to COVID-19 protocols, returns to action looking for its first conference win of the season against a South Alabama program that already has two close wins over the Chanticleers this season.  After falling 68-57 to the Jaguars in game one on Jan. 8 on the road, the Chants saw an eight-point lead with 4:04 to play in the game evaporate into a 55-52 road loss on Jan. 9.

Aja Blount, a preseason All-Sun Belt selection, leads Coastal Carolina and ranks fourth in the conference in scoring at 13.7 points per game.  The junior forward also ranks 12th in the Sun Belt with 7.3 rebounds per game and second in free throw percentage at 73.3 percent.

Sophomore guard Deaja Richardson, a transfer from Tennessee State University, gained her eligibility just before the start of conference play and has given head coach Jaida Williams another scoring option.  Richardson, who had 10 and nine points respectively in the two games earlier this season at South Alabama, has started the last three games and ranks second on the team with 9.3 points per game.

Joining Blount as one of the top rebounders in the Sun Belt is senior Janae Camp.  The 6-1 forward is second on the team with 6.6 rebounds per game.
South Alabama (9-7, 6-4 SBC) has split four of its five two-game Sun Belt Conference series this year and is 2-4 on the road.  The Jaguars are led by senior forward Antoinette Lewis and junior guard Mahogany Vaught.  Lewis is nearly averaging a double-double with 11.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.  Vaught leads South Alabama in scoring at 11.8 points per game.

Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+, the Chanticleers Sports Network at 105.5 Hank FM, and online at www.GoCCUsports.com.
