Coastal Picked First in Preseason Poll; Three Chants Named Preseason All-Conference

Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse will open the 2021 season on Feb. 17
Spartanburg, S.C. – Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse received four first-place votes and was tabbed to finish first in the 2021 Southern Conference Preseason Lacrosse Coaches Poll, it was announced today by the league office. The Chanticleers are in their first season in the Southern Conference (SoCon).
In addition to the first-place selection, the Chanticleers had three student-athletes in Samantha Courtemanche, Emily D'Orsaneo, and Sarah Trupp named to the SoCon preseason All-Conference team.
The Chants totaled 16 points in the preseason poll just ahead of fellow conference members Furman (12 points) and the 2019 defending SoCon Champions Mercer (11 points). The Paladins tallied one first-place vote in the five-team conference. Rounding out the preseason poll was Wofford (7) and Delaware State (4).
Courtemanche, who is Coastal's leading scorer returning from the last two seasons, will lead an offensive attack that will return four of its top five point scorers in the shortened 2020 season. No stranger to preseason accolades, the graduate student, was named to the 2020 ASUN preseason All-Conference team. She then started the season tallying 18 points on eight goals and 10 assists.
D'Orsaneo, a Centreville, Md. defender, has started every contest since arriving and is tasked to the opposing team's top offensive threat. The fifth-year player has caused 48 turnovers and scooped up 105 groundballs in her previous four years in teal.
Trupp, a graduate transfer from Stetson, set the Hatters' program record with 64 career caused turnovers. In 2019, the Bridgewaters, N.Y. native, earned second-team All-ASUN honors with 59 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers (most in a single season). In the shortened 2020 season, Trupp scooped 22 ground balls and caused seven turnovers while winning three draw controls.
The Chanticleers open the 2021 season with a neutral site contest with Radford on Feb. 17.
CCU's first home match is set for Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. ET versus Kennesaw State at Brooks Stadium.
