SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samantha Courtemanche of the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team tallied five goals to lead the Chanticleers to an 18-5 victory over the Wofford Terriers in the Chants first-ever Southern Conference game. With the win, Coastal improved to 4-0, for the first time in program history, while the Terriers fall to 0-3 on the season.
Coastal's Courtemanche, the back-to-back SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, tallied her second consecutive eight-point contest with five goals and three assists while getting scoring help from seven of her teammates.
Abbey Buchanan scored her first career hat trick by finding the back of the net on all three of her shot attempts.
Defensively, the Chanticleers caused nine turnovers led by
Kayla Downey's team-high three, while grabbing 22 ground balls led by Buchanan with three.
Claire Martell would make seven saves while allowing just four goals.
Megan Curran allowed one goal in her first outing of the year for the Chanticleers.
Lauren Cremen (two goals) opened the scoring in the first half with just 1:05 expiring from the game clock to give the Chants a 1-0 advantage. Wofford would answer back with 25:33 remaining in the first half to even it up at 1-1.
CCU's Courtemanche would give Coastal a 3-1 lead it would never relinquish as the Chants would open up an 8-1 advantage before the Terriers would hit the scoreboard again. The Chants would get goals from Courtemanche, Buchanan, Cremen, and
Megan Bozzi (one goal) before Wofford's Elisabeth Ralph would make it 8-2.
Bailey O'Brien (one goal, two assists), Courtemanche, and Buchanan closed out the first half scoring to give CCU an 11-2 advantage with 30 minutes left to play.
Coastal would outscore the host Terriers 7-3 in the final 30 minutes of action as
Maddie Bates (two goals, one assist) would open the final stanza with her first Chanticleer goal to give the visitors the 10 goal-advantage and start the running clock.
Monica Manley followed up with her fourth goal of the season off of the first of Downey's two assists. Courtemanche and
Abi George (one goal) wrapped up a 4-0 run to push the Chants' lead to 15-2.
Wofford's Brenna Duley and Ralph would close the gap to 11 as they scored back-to-back to make it 15-4 for Coastal.
Avery Snyder scored her second goal of the season with 8:53 remaining to push CCU's lead to 16-4.
Shannon Wulff finished the scoring for the Terriers with 5:43 remaining in regulation to make it 16-5 Coastal before CCU's Bates and Manley tallied the final two goals for the final 18-5 margin.
The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team will return to action on March 7 in Conway, S.C. as the Chants will host the Davidson Wildcats. The opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
