CONWAY - On Tuesday, the Coastal Carolina softball team will will travel to play intrastate rival, the College of Charleston Cougars, at Patriots Point Athletic Complex in Charleston S.C.
CCU has a 9-18 overall record after going 1-2 in Sun Belt Conference play last weekend versus the Georgia Southern Eagles.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
- The Chanticleers are on the road for the sixth time this season when they visit Charleston, S.C. for the second time in three weeks as they visit the College of Charleston. Coastal has an overall record of 9-18 this season, and on the road, it is 3-8 away from the friendly confines of St. John Stadium in 2021.
- CCU is batting .277 in 14 games at home compared to .251 in 11 games on the road this season.
- Junior Abbey Montoya leads the Chanticleers with a .345 batting average in 10 road games this season. The Chanticleer shortstop has tallied a home run, three RBI, and forced two walks in her 29 at-bats.
- Senior Makiya Thomas is batting .324 (11-for-34), with five doubles, four walks, and four stolen bases in 11 Coastal's road games.
- The Chants pitching staff has an ERA of 5.02 in 14 home games compared to a 4.73 ERA in 11 games on the road this season.
- Senior Kaitlin Beasley-Polko leads the Chanticleer pitching staff with a 3.72 road earned run average in seven appearances.
LOOKIN' BACK
- Last weekend, April 9-10, Coastal played a three-game conference series versus Georgia Southern as it lost the series 2-1 by the scores of 5-3, 1-9, and 6-7.
- Junior Mackenzie Beyer had a pair of home runs in the three-game series, including the first walk-off home run of her career in game one to snap the Chants' three-game losing streak. It was the first time this season the Chanticleers team earned a come-from-behind victory after trailing after four innings of play.
- In game two, Georgia Southern scored five runs in the second inning en route to a 9-1 six-inning victory. The Chanticleer pitching staff allowed a season-high five doubles for the second time this season.
- Four Chants had two hits in a game for the second time this season during game three of the series, but it wasn't enough after GS jumped out a 7-3 lead. Shayla Smith led the Eagles with two home runs and three RBI in the 7-6 victory.
MASHING MAKIYA
- Tacoma, Wash., native Makiya Thomas has hit safely in 21 of the 27 Chanticleer games this season.
- Thomas is 15th in the conference with a .360 batting average, sixth with 12 stolen bases, is tied for seventh with 10 doubles, 24th with a .539 slugging percentage, and 25th with a .410 on-base percentage.
- The senior outfielder had an eight-game hitting streak snapped last Saturday in a 9-1 game-one loss versus Georgia Southern. During her streak, Thomas batted .444 (12-for-27) with two doubles, five walks, and five stolen bases.
- Thomas is leading the team in eight offensive categories, including; batting average (.360), at-bats (89), hits (32), multi-hit games (10), runs scored (18), doubles (10), total bases (48), and stolen bases (12).
- The left-handed batter is one of two Chanticleers to be selected to the 2021 preseason All-Sun Belt team.
BALLIN' BEYER
- In the last 14 games, junior catcher Mackenzie Beyer has raised her batting average from .231 to .286.
- During that time, Beyer has batted .324 with six home runs, a double, forced four walks, and knocked in nine RBI.
- Beyer leads the Coastal team with seven home runs this season.
- Beyer's walk-off homer versus Georgia Southern on April 9 was the first Chant come-from-behind victory of the season when trailing after four innings and the first since April 28, 2018, when then-senior Timi Tooley hit a walk-off versus South Alabama.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
- The College of Charleston is 6-24 overall. The Cougars lost seven of their last nine and three straight last weekend in a CAA series versus Elon.
- CofC scored four runs in the three-game set versus Elon. Aniz Roman led the Cougars in the weekend series as she batted .636 (7-for-11). On the season, Roman is second on the Cougs team with a .348 batting average and has an OPS of .866.
- Jenna Helberg is the leading College of Charleston hitter at .382. Payton Wade brings the Cougars' power numbers to the dish as she leads the team with five home runs, 14 RBI, is tied with for the team lead with five doubles.
- Kylie Burke leads the pitching staff with a 3.78 ERA, 42 strikeouts in 57.1 innings of work.
HISTORY AGAINST
- The series dates back to 1989.
- The longest win streak of any team is 12, held by Coastal from 1989 to 1994.
- Coastal holds the all-time series advantage, 47-25, with the last game being played in 2019 as CCU won 1-0 on a RBI single from then-freshman Sydney Guess.
- Before 2019, the Cougars won with back-to-back games in 2017 and 2018. CCU alum Ashley Guillette toed the rubber for the Chanticleers in each of the last three matchups.
