CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team will head to Florida to play in the Sun Belt Conference Championship scheduled for Sunday-Tuesday, April 18-20 at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The course layout for the 54-hole, three-day championship will be a par 72 and cover 6,050 yards. The teams will tee off from split tees, beginning at 8 a.m. ET, with six teams starting on hole one and five teams on hole 10.
2018 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Katie Quinney has the Chants looking for their second SBC title since entering the conference five years ago. CCU enters the championship tournament with the third-best team scoring average at 296.56 behind only South Alabama (295.54) and Texas State (295.83).
All six of the Chanticleers are ranked among the top-24 scorers in the Sun Belt, led by freshman Nicole Abelar who leads CCU with a 73.13 scoring average. Her average is the top scoring average in the conference and her 1.13 score vs. par is second. The first-year Chant set program records for a low round (-7), low 54-hole tournament score (-11), low 54-hole three-round score (205), and tied the low 18-hole score (65), all at the River Landing Classic.
Tiffany Arafi is 13th among all Sun Belt golfers with a 74.73 stroke average and a 2.73 score vs. par. The junior missed the fall season but has been playing her best golf of the spring over the past two tournaments. She finished tied for third in the final regular-season event at the ECU Easter Invitational
Sophomore Sophia Carlsen is just behind Arafi as the 14th-ranked player in the Sun Belt. She has shown vast improvement over her freshman campaign and is the only team member to play in all nine events this season. She enters the conference championship with a 74.68 scoring average and a 2.80 score vs. par.
Caitlin Evans-Brand is ranked No. 18 entering the championship with a 75.50 stroke average and a 3.50 score vs. par while Heidrun Hlynsdottir is the 21st-ranked player with her 75.54 scoring average and 3.77 score vs. par. Lone senior Frantiska Lunackova, who missed most of the fall schedule, is playing her way back into form. She enters the title run at No. 24 in the Sun Belt with a 75.74 stroke average and a 3.89 score vs. par average.
