Weekend Schedule Change for UTA Series

Chants and Mavs will play one game on Saturday and two Sunday

CONWAY – Coastal Carolina softball's Sun Belt Conference weekend series at home versus the UT Arlington Mavericks has has been revised due to the impending rain expected for Horry County on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams will play one game on Saturday, slated for a 10 a.m. first pitch. The pair will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader, scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.

The Chanticleers come into the weekend sporting a four-game winning streak. Coastal Carolina in eighth-place of the SBC with an 4-11 record of 15-19 overall. The Mavericks enter the weekend in sixth-place of the conference standings with a 7-7 record and 14-25 overall.

Health and safety protocols for attendance will remain in place to include, but not limited to:
  • Admission to home games will be managed by a team list only and no tickets will be sold.
  • Face coverings WILL BE required.
  • Creation of "buffer" around the field and/or team areas (i.e. dugouts, bullpens).
  • When concessions are available, cashless or touchless payment options (when applicable) will be available along with pre-packaged food and beverage options.
  • Increased cleaning of high traffic areas during events.
  • No printed gameday programs or rosters.
Coastal Carolina University and the Department of Athletics is committed to providing a safe environment for the enjoyment of our patrons that attend our home intercollegiate athletic events. Individuals that disregard health and safety protocols may be asked to leave.

HOME SWEET HOME
  • UTA and the CCU meet for the first time at St. John Stadium since the 2018 season when the Mavericks took the series, 2-1.
  • The Chanticleers have won their last two games at home in midweek doubleheader games on Wednesday, April 21, versus the Campbell Camels, 7-6 (8 innings) and 6-4, to improve their home record to 8-8 this season.
  • CCU is batting .283 in 16 games at home compared to .286 in 16 games on the road this season.
  • Senior Makiya Thomas leads Chanticleers with a .370 (20-for-54) batting average, five doubles, one triple, two homers, six walks, and seven stolen bases in 16 Coastal's home games.
  • Graduate student Kayla Rosado is second on the team as she is batting .356 (16-for-45) at home with three home runs, two doubles, and 11 RBI in 16
  • Junior Mackenzie Beyer has a .355 batting average in 14 home games this season. The Chanticleer catcher has tallied four home runs, 13 RBI, and forced five walks in her 31 at-bats.
  • The Chants' pitching staff has a 4.91 in 16 home games compared to a 4.23 ERA in 16 games on the road this season.
  • Senior Kaitlin Beasley-Polko leads the Chanticleer pitching staff with a 3.97 home earned run average in nine appearances.

LOOKIN' BACK
  • The Chanticleers swept the Campbell Camels on Wednesday, April 21, at home to improve their win streak to four games. It's the second time this season the Chants have won four-straight.
  • It took eight innings to defeat the Camels, 7-6 in game one, but the Chants' Thomas got the win for CCU with a walk-off single as she went the 3-for-4 with a triple. It was Thomas' third time in five games she had a three-hit outing, the most by any CCU player this season.
  • Beasley-Polko pitched her second eight-inning game in three starts to earn the win to improve to 8-8 on the season. The Leonardtown, Md., native labored through a start that saw her allow 10 hits, six earned runs, and punch out nine batters.
  • In game two, Rosado extended her hitting streak to 10 games as she went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, and season-high in the 6-4 victory.
  • Thomas had her seven-game hitting streak snapped in game two as she went 0-for-2 with a walk.

MASHING MAKIYA
  • On Wednesday, April 21, Makiya Thomas had her seven-game hitting snapped in the game two of the home doubleheader versus Campbell.
  • Thomas batted .452 (14-for-31), with nine RBI, three doubles, one triple, a walk, and two stolen bases during her hitting streak.
  • On Tuesday, April 20, it was announced that senior Makiya Thomas was voted the Sun Belt Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
  • The lefty bat has hit safely in 27 of the 34 Chanticleer games this season and 15 of her last 17.
  • Thomas is ninth in the conference with a .385 batting average, tied for fourth with 14 stolen bases, tied for fourth with 13 doubles, 20th with a .564 slugging percentage, and 12th with a .435 on-base percentage.
  • The senior outfielder is leading the team in eight offensive categories, including; batting average (.385), at-bats (117), hits (45), multi-hit games (14), runs scored (25), doubles (13), total bases (66), and stolen bases (14).
  • Thomas is one of two Chanticleers to be selected to the 2021 preseason All-Sun Belt team.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
  • UTA is 14-25 overall, 7-7 in Sun Belt Conference play, and 5-5 in their last 10 games.
  • The last time out, April 21, the Mavericks fell to the No.9 Oklahoma State, 9-3, despite a 2-for-3 night by Madison Miller and KJ Murphy. Kenedy Hines dropped to 4-10 as she allowed five hits, five runs, five earned, and two walks in 3.1 innings of work.
  • KJ Murphy leads UT Arlington hitters with a .397 batting average with five home runs, 10 doubles, and 24 RBI.
  • Jo Jo Valcenica leads the Mavs pitching staff with a 2.19 ERA, Hines leads the team with four wins and 65 innings pitched, while Laura Hendrikson leads the five-person pitching staff with 12 starts.

HISTORY AGAINST
  • The series dates back to 2017,  Coastal's first year in the Sun Belt, with a UTA holding a 2-9 all-time advantage.
  • The longest win streak of any team is six games, held by UTA when they swept the first all-time series in 2017-2018.
  • The last game between the two teams occurred on May 5, 2019, when the Chanticleers knocked off the Mavericks, 5-4, with two home runs in their second-round game of the 2019 Sun Belt Tournament.  The duo of then-senior Natalie David and then-freshman Mackenzie Beyer led the Chanticleers offensively as they combined to go 3-for-6 with two home runs, two runs scored, and five RBI.  Then-senior Ashley Guillette tied her career-high with the victory as she pitched 5.2 innings, allowed one run on five hits, and struck out four Mavericks to advance CCU to the third round of the SBC tournament.third round of the SBC tournament.
