DELAND, Fla. – After posting a first-round 5-0 win over No. 5 Mercer in the morning session, the Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team suffered a 4-1 defeat to the top-seeded and No. 16-nationally ranked Stetson Hatters in the second round of the 2021 ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship on Friday afternoon in DeLand, Fla.

Coastal (23-7) lost to No. 16 Stetson (18-12) for the second time this season. All seven of the Chanticleers' losses this season have come to nationally-ranked teams.

The Hatters took a 1-0 lead with a 21-19, 21-14 win at No. 5 before the Sandy Chants tied the match score up at 1-1 with a three-set 13-21, 21-18, 15-10 win at the No. 4 flight by Carli Ginther and Ellie Hanford over Stetson's team of Brittany McLean and Noelle Weintraub.

The next three matches would go in favor of the top-seeded Hatters, as Stetson posted a 21-13, 21-14 straight-set win at No. 1 to fall behind 2-1 before Stetson sealed the match win with a 21-16, 24-22 victory at flight No. 2 to put the score at 3-1.

Stetson finished off the match with a 21-15, 21-15 win at flight No. 3 to put the final score at 4-1.

The Chanticleers will play in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament at noon ET on Saturday, April 24. Coastal will play the winner of No. 6 North Alabama and No. 7 Jacksonville.
