DELAND, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball Sandy Chants swept the No. 5 Mercer Bears 5-0 in the first round of the 2021 ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship on Friday morning. With the win the No. 4 Chants will take on No. 1 Stetson at 2 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon in the second round in DeLand, Fla.
Coastal (23-6) has now defeated Mercer (9-17) five times this season on the sand.
The team of
Emma Gonzalez and
Kalin Eske started the match off with a 21-11, 21-13 straight-set win over Aggie Paskevic and Ellie Miller at the No. 5 flight while the duo of
Carli Ginther and
Ellie Hanford dropped the team of Hana Robertson and Elena Sanfrey in straight sets 21-7, 21-16 to put the Chants on top 2-0 in the match.
The sophomore tandem of
Irena Drobnjak and
Sarlota Svobodova sealed the match win with a three-set victory at 21-11, 17-21, 15-12 at the No. 1 flight over Elli Merchant and Olivia Boeve of the Bears.
Capping off the first-round win for the Sandy Chants was the pair of
Lucy Campbell and
Martine Kragholm battling back from a first-set 19-21 loss to take the next two sets 22-20 and 15-7 at flight No. 2, while the team of
Sarah Riedell and
Kendra Lukacs held on for a 21-19, 17-21, 15-12 three-set win at flight No. 3 to complete the 5-0 sweep.
