DELAND, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team shook off a slow start and pulled out a 13-8 win over former ASUN Conference foe Stetson in DeLand, Fla. on Sunday afternoon. The Chanticleers improved to 10-6 on the year with the win, while the Hatters dropped to 1-7 on the year with the loss.
Coastal's offense was led by
Samantha Courtemanche and
Megan Bozzi as each player tallied three goals apiece while Courtemanche added three assists for six points and Bozzi added one assist for four points.
Kayla Downey aided with a pair of goals and four assists for six points while fellow starter
Avery Snyder added one goal.
Lauren Cremen and
Monica Manley both came off the bench to chip in with two goals apiece as Manley also added one assist.
In the defensive third,
Claire Martell recorded 11 saves while allowing just eight goals in earning the team's 10th win of the season. The Verbank, N.Y. native caused one turnover while grabbing 10 ground balls while defenders
Emily D'Orsaneo,
Anya McSorley, and
Sarah Trupp combined to scoop up seven ground balls.
Stetson's Erin Collier led the Hatters' offense with three goals while Quinn Roe, Riley Reagan, Jessica Duggan, Marina Rotella, and Jacklyn Lavoie recorded one goal each.
The Hatters' goalkeeper Kiera McCarthy matched her counterpart with 11 saves but allowed 13 goals in the loss.
Stetson opened the scoring taking a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes of action as Saige-Lyn Gidzinski found Roe in front of the crease with 26:37 on the game clock for the 1-0 lead. Rotella put the Hatters up 2-0 off a Reagan assist with 21:17 left in the first half.
The Chants answered with two goals to even it up with 16:43 remaining until the halftime break. Downey scored the first CCU goal with 19:07 left in the first half off of a Courtemanche assist. Downey found Bozzi in front of the net to even the contest at 2-2 with 16:43 left until the intermission.
The first half action closed as Collier (9:48, 0:13) sandwiched a Courtemanche (6:17) goal with Stetson taking a 4-3 lead into the halftime break.
Just 45 seconds into the second half Coastal's Cremen sparked a second-half eight-goal run to put the Chants in front 11-4 with 20:45 left to play. Downey recorded her second assist by finding a cutting Cremen to even up the match at 4-4 with 29:15 left in the game. Just 58 seconds later, Courtemanche gave CCU its first lead of the match at 5-4.
The Chants pushed their advantage to 6-4 as Manley beat the Stetson defense off a Downey pass from behind the net with 27:34 showing on the clock while just 41 seconds later Bozzi assisted on Cremen's second goal of the day for the 7-4 Coastal lead.
Manley followed with a free-position goal to make it 8-4 with 25:42 left in the game. A pair of true freshmen teamed up to give CCU a 9-4 advantage, as Manley found classmate Snyder in front of the crease with 24:56 remaining. Bozzi made it 10-4 just 53 seconds later on a free-position goal, as Courtemanche capped the eight-goal run off Downey's fourth assist of the day with 20:45 remaining to play to push the Chants' lead out to an 11-4 margin.
Stetson's Duggan stopped the bleeding with the free-position goal with 19:39 left on the game clock to cut the visitor's advantage to 11-5. Collier added the hat trick goal off a free-position goal to cut the CCU led to 11-6, while Reagan followed by scoring her sixth goal of the year with 9:48 left to play as the Hatters trailed 11-7.
The Chanticleers' Bozzi (8:26) and Downey (1:22) sandwiched a Lavoie (6:58) goal as Courtemanche picked up a pair of assists in the 13-8 win.
The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team will return to Conway, S.C. as the Chants will host Delaware State in the final matchup of the regular season on Friday, April 30. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
