Softball Heads to UNCW for Midweek Tilt

Coastal looks to improve on its seven-game winning streak on Wednesday

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team looks to add to their seven-game winning streak on Wednesday, April 28, as they travel to Wilmington, N.C. to take on the UNCW Seahawks at Boseman Field in their final midweek game of the 2021 season.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.

The Chanticleers come into the matchup as they have won seven-straight games and have an overall record of 18-19, while the Seahawks are 13-21 this season.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
  • Coastal is 5-3 this season in midweek games, but 3-3 on the road. The Chants are 3-1 over their last four games, with a sweep at the College of Charleston on April 13 (14-2, 14-3) and a split at the Charleston Southern on March 24 (7-8,7-3).
  • CCU is batting .282 in 19 games at home compared to .286 in 16 games on the road this season.
  • Senior Makiya Thomas leads Chanticleers with a .375 (21-for-56) batting average, nine RBI, eight doubles, scored 10 times, forced five walks, and stole six bases in 16 Coastal's road games.
  • Junior Abbey Montoya is second on the team with a .348 (16-for-46) batting average with home runs, nine RBI in 15 road games.
  • Graduate student Kayla Rosado is third on the team as she is batting .319 (15-for-47) away from St. John Stadium with four doubles and a home run in 16 road games. Rosado has hit safely in her last six road games.
  • The Chants' pitching staff has a 4.38 in 19 home games compared to a 4.16 ERA in 16 games on the road this season.
  • Senior Kaitlin Beasley-Polko leads the Chanticleer pitching staff with a 3.19 away earned run average in 11 appearances.

LOOKIN' BACK
  • The Chanticleers swept the UT Arlington Mavericks (8-5, 6-1, 5-2)  last weekend, April 24-25, at home to improve their win streak to seven games, their best of the season, and their first Sun Belt Conference sweep since South Alabama in April of 2019.
  • Senior Stavi Augur led Coastal in the series as she batted .455 (5-for-11) with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored and an OPS of 1.182.
  • Starting pitchers Beasley-Polko, Iyanla De Jesus, and Raelee Brabham each earned a victory in the sweep of the Mavs. Beasley-Polko improved to 9-8 on the season as she earned the game one win. The Leonardtown, Md., native allowed five runs and four earned on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. \Brabham picked up her first save of the season in relief of Beasley-Polko in game one but returned the next day to earn her fifth win of the season as she allowed two runs, struck out three on a season-high 115 pitches. De Jesus earned her fourth complete game of the year on Saturday as she allowed six hits, one run, and tied her career-high seven strikeouts.

STEWIN STAVI
  • In her last 15 games, Augur has hit safely in 11 games with a .346 batting average, five doubles, two home runs, 12 runs scored, and 10 RBI.
  • The Del Mar, Calif., native started the season below a .100 (.098) batting average and now has since then raised her batting average to .237 during the 15-game span.
  • In the three-game series sweep versus UTA, Augur batted .455 (5-for-11), a home run, three RBI, and scored three runs.

RIDING ROSADO
  • Graduate student Rosado earned her first-career Sun Belt Player of the Week on April 27 as she batted .429 (6-for-14) with three home runs, eight RBI, and an OPS of 1.699 in five games versus Campbell and UT Arlington.
  • The Iradell, N.J., native had her team season-high 10-game hitting streak snapped of 10-straight games on April 24 versus UTA.
  • During her streak, Rosado had batted .484 (15-for-31) with three doubles, a home run, six walks, an on-base percentage of .579, and a .679 slugging percentage.
  • In the series versus UTA, the lefty batted 2-for-9, with two home runs, four runs scored.
  • The Chants' first baseman batted 4-fo-5 in the two games versus Campbell with a home run and a double.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
  • UNCW is 13-21 overall this season and were swept at No. 25 James Madison last weekend, but in their previous five games, the Seahawks won five straight versus; N.C. A&T (1), College of Charleston (3), and Campbell (1).
  • In game one, sister of Chanticleer senior Courtney Dean, Camryn Dean brought in three runs with her first home run of the season in a 10-3 loss.
  • Jada Santiago, Jentri Meadows, and Hunter Bozell picked up an RBI apiece in the 11-3 loss in game two.
  • JMU erupted for nine runs on six hits in game three, including three home runs, in the third inning to build a 9-0 lead they did not relinquish as they the advantage on their way to a 9-3 victory.
  • The Seahawks sport three batters in their starting lineup with a batting average of .350 or better. Janel Gamache leads the team with a .398 batting average, Jada Santiago follows behind at .394, and Tayler Vitola is batting .356. Gamache is also part of the Seahawk pitching staff, where she is second on the team with a 3.32 ERA and is tied for the staff lead with 33 strikeouts. Logan Bjornson leads a five-person pitching staff with a 4-0 record.

HISTORY AGAINST
  • The Chanticleers hold a 71-22 all-time advantage, and the longest win streak by any team in the series is nine-straight by CCU from 1993-1995
  • The last time the two teams met, CCU took the April 16, 2019 game by the score of 6-4. The Chants had three players with multiple-hit games, led by Kassidy Smith and Courtney Dean, who had a home run and a double apiece.
