Downey and Martell Named SoCon Players of the Week

Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse sweeps conference weekly award for a third time
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Kayla Downey and Claire Martell of the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team were named Southern Conference (SoCon) Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for their performances on April 23 and April 25, respectively.
The Chants went 2-0 with road victories over then-No. 9 Jacksonville (13-12) and Stetson (13-8) with the victory over the nationally-ranked Dolphins the first-ever win over a top-10 team in program history.
Downey tallied 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists) for both contests leading the Chanticleer offensive attack. The Babylon, N.Y. native scored two goals and assisted on four of her teammate's goals in each matchup. Downey's first goal against Jacksonville knotted the game up at 4-4 ending the only lead the Dolphins would hold in the contest. For the season, the redshirt freshman attacker is second on the team in goals (33), assists (28), and points (61).
In the defensive third of the field, Martell had a career-high 14 saves against nationally-ranked Jacksonville while scooping up three ground balls in the win. The Verbank, N.Y. native followed up with 11 saves against Stetson two days later in picking up her 10th win of the season. Martell currently leads the SoCon in saves (140), save percentage (.459), and goals-against average (10.39).
