NEW ORLEANS – Coastal Carolina sophomore
Garrett Cooper has been named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the league announced on Thursday.
Playing as an individual at the Golfweek Spring Invitational, Cooper recorded his first-ever intercollegiate top-five finish, placing in a tie for fifth place overall at the 54-hole event.
The Chesnee, S.C. native carded a career-low round 67, 5-under par, on the final round of play to jump 14 spots up the player leaderboard and finish in a tie for fifth overall.
The career-low round of 67 followed his first two round scores of 71 and 72 to give him a 54-hole score of 210, 6-under par. The 54-hole tournament score is the lowest of Cooper's young CCU career.
Cooper turned in 14 birdies, including seven over his final round of play on Tuesday, and 32 pars over his 54-holes of play at the two-day event. Over his three rounds of play, he birdied holes No. 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17.
The conference award is the first for the second-year Chant. He becomes the third Chanticleer to win the weekly award this spring joining fellow teammates
States Fort (Feb. 17) and
Zack Taylor (March 18).
