Babayan Highlights the Chants’ Day 1 at ITA Carolina Regionals

Coastal will have all eight student-athletes in action tomorrow
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team opened up day one of the 2022 ITA Carolina Regional Championships by going 4-2 in singles play, as three Chanticleers posted a singles victory on Thursday at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
In the women's open singles main draw qualifying, sophomore Anna Babayan advanced to the Round of 16 by going 2-0 on the day with a first-round 6-0, 6-4 win over Gabriela Glickstein of UNCW and a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory in the second round over Hanna Axelsson of Queens.
Both Tatum Burger and Lilie Steryous won their first-round matches in the main draw qualifying bracket, as Burger won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 over Claire Giddings of Presbyterian College, while Steryous held on for a 7-5, 6-3 win over Sara McClure of North Carolina.
However, both of the CCU newcomers would fall in the second round of play in hard-fought matches, as Burger was defeated 7-5, 6-3 by Halli Trinkle of the College of Charleston, and Steryous fell in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to Ana Cruz of South Carolina.
In doubles play, the team of Victoire De Samucewicz and Kata Foldeak lost to the duo of Sophia Hatton and Daniella Medvedva of Clemson 8-2 in the A1 Doubles draw, while the pair of Isabella Weatherhead and Megan Hopton was forced to withdraw due to an illness.
In the A2 Doubles draw, the duo of Jesse Hollins and Steryous suffered an 8-6 loss in the first round to the team of Cristina Mayorova and Eleni Louka of Clemson, while the tandem of Burger and Babayan dropped their doubles contest 8-2 to Cameron Morra and Chloe Beck.
The Chanticleers will continue play at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships tomorrow.
