Coastal Welcomes Charleston Southern for Midweek Doubleheader

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team will look to add another win to the ledger on the young season, as the Chanticleers host Charleston Southern on March 15, for a midweek non-conference doubleheader at St. John Stadium.
 
First pitch for game one is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET with game two following 30 minutes later.
 
CCU comes into the matchup at 10-11 overall and 1-2 in Sun Belt Conference play, while the Buccaneers enter at 9-12 overall and 1-2 in Big South play.

CHANTS' LAST TIME OUT
The Chanticleers finished the opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference play 1-2 overall, after inclement weather in the Myrtle Beach/Conway area on Saturday forced a Sunday double-header against Troy. 
 
Coastal dropped the first two games of the series, 5-2 on Friday and 3-1 on Sunday, before rallying to come from behind in the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday and defeat Troy 4-3. 
 
In the circle, Kaitlin Beasley-Polko recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts in game two on Sunday to bring her weekend total to 19. In 12.0 innings of work, the Leonardtown, Md., native walked just four batters and allowed just five runs on 11 hits. 
 
Makiya Thomas led the offensive efforts for the Chants, finishing the weekend batting .556 with a .667 on-base percentage and a .778 slugging percentage. The graduate student had five hits in nine at-bats, including two doubles. She drew three walks, stole two bases, and tallied one RBI.
 
BUCS' LAST TIME OUT
Charleston Southern opened Big South play against Campbell on March 12-13. The Bucs took the first game of the weekend 4-1, before falling in Sunday's doubleheader 5-4 (8 inn.) and 3-1 in the second game. 
 
Raleigh Lewis and Madison Koger led the Bucs at the plate, as both finished the weekend batting .400, while Lewis recorded a .900 slugging percentage and a .455 on-base percentage. In 10 at-bats, both Lewis and Koger recorded four hits, while Lewis led with two runs, two doubles, one home run, and two RBIs.

Annah Junge and Blake Holtorf each saw time in the circle against the Camels. Junge tallied two complete games, pitching 14.0 innings in which she allowed 11 hits and four runs. Holtorf saw 8.0 innings of work and allowed five runs on 14 hits.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
Coastal leads in the all-time series, 69-35 over Charleston Southern. The first meeting took place on March 9, 1987, in Conway, S.C. – a 7-4 victory for Charleston Southern. However, Coastal took the last meeting between the two former Big South foes, 7-6 on March 24, 2021, in Charleston. 
 
HOME SWEET ST. JOHN
After spending the first month of the season at home, Coastal returns to Conway and will host 10 of its 20 March games at home. The Chanticleers are 8-8 at home so far this season.
 
HOME RUN CLINIC
The Chanticleers have hit 31 total home runs while opponents have hit just 22 in the young season. So far this season, 10 different Coastal players have hit home runs as Abbey MontoyaIyanla De JesusKeirstin Rooseand Riley Zana have recorded five apiece. Madison Hudson (3), Maddy Jennings (3), Payton Ebersole (2), Makiya Thomas (1), Jay Wrightsman (1), and Abby Jankay (1) have also contributed to Coastal's home run tally.
