Softball Set to Host Texas State for Weekend Series

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team looks to return to the win column as the Chanticleers are set to welcome Texas State to St. John Stadium for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series, March 25-27.

Game one is set for 4:00 p.m. ET on Friday. Notably, Sunday's matchup has been moved up to an 11:30 a.m. ET first pitch.

CCU enters the weekend 12-14 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while TXST holds a 14-13 overall record and a 2-4 SBC record.

CHANTS LAST TIME OUT
Coastal returned to Sun Belt action, in Arlington, Texas, against UT Arlington on March 18-20. The Chanticleers dropped all three games of the weekend series to the Mavericks. 

On just its second road trip of the season, CCU fought but came up short against UTA. 
 
Coastal fell to UT Arlington 11-5 on Friday, before falling on Saturday and Sunday by a score of 5-2 on both days. 
                       
At the plate, Makiya Thomas led the offensive effort for the Chants over the past weekend as the graduate student finished the series hitting .455. In 11 at-bats, the Tacoma Washington native recorded three runs, five hits, three RBIs, two doubles, and one home run. Notably, she also drew one walk.
 
BOBCATS' LAST TIME OUT
On Wednesday, Texas State faced in-state foe and No. 23 nationally-ranked Texas. The Bobcats welcomed the Longhorns to San Marcos and dropped the matchup 4-2.

After Hannah Earls infield single, Sara Vanderford sent a two-run home run over the left-field fence to put the host team up 2-0.

Texas tied the contest in the top of the third inning off back-to-back doubles. In the top of seventh inning, the Longhorns took control after a five-pitch walk and a two-run home run from McKenzie Parker to make the final score, 4-2.

In the circle, Jessica Mullins (9-9) suffered the loss for TXST throwing a complete game and at the plate, Vanderford led the offensive effort going 1-for-2 recording one run, one hit, and two RBIs.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES   
Coastal trails in the series 2-9, with Texas State holding a three-game winning streak against the Chants. The two schools met for the first time on March 11, 2017, a 5-4 victory for the Bobcats in 8 innings and most recently faced off on April 2, 2021. Texas State walked away with a 3-2 victory.

CCU's last victory over Texas State came on April 14, 2019 – a 12-2, 5 inning outing for the Chants.
 
HOME RUN DERBY
The Chanticleers have hit 40 total home runs while opponents have hit just 27. So far this season, 10 different Coastal players have hit home runs. Roose leads the offensive effort for Coastal as the true freshman has recorded seven home runs. Riley Zana and Iyanla De Jesus are tied for second in the home run race as each has tallied six homers this season.
 
Abbey Montoya has recorded five. Payton Ebersole (4), Maddy Jennings (4), Madison Hudson (4), Makiya Thomas (2), Jay Wrightsman (1), and Abby Jankay (1) have also contributed to Coastal's home run tally.
 
HOME SWEET ST. JOHN
Including this weekend's series, 21 of CCU's 29 total contests have been played at St. John Stadium. The Chanticleers are 10-8 overall at home this season.
