Softball Heads South to Face South Alabama

CONWAY, S.C. – Fresh off a midweek sweep of Winthrop on Tuesday afternoon, the Coastal Carolina softball team remains on the road and heads south for a weekend Sun Belt Conference series against South Alabama, April 1-3, at Jaguar Field in Mobile, Ala.

The Chanticleers enter the weekend 14-17 overall and 1-8 in Sun Belt Conference play while the Jaguars enter at 12-14 overall and 5-1 in SBC play.

FOLLOW THE ACTION
All three games of the weekend series are available for stream via ESPN+. Fans can also follow all the action via LiveStats. Links can be found on the Coastal softball schedule page.

BIGGER THAN SOFTBALL
This weekend's three-game series will be a 'Teal Game' series in partnership with South Alabama.

USA will honor the memory of Alex "Snowman" Wilcox, sister of current Jaguars catcher Kassidy Wilcox. Wilcox was a member of the 2018 Mississippi State softball team who inspired the nation with her courageous fight against ovarian cancer. That fight ultimately took her life in the summer of 2018. During her freshman season, Wilcox continued to practice while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

CHANTS LAST TIME OUT
Coastal Carolina snapped a six-game winless streak as the Chanticleers swept Winthrop in a midweek doubleheader.

In game one, CCU tallied a 2-0 victory and Kaitlin Beasley-Polko allowed just one hit in 7.0 innings of work.

Seven innings would not be enough in game two, as the Chants and Eagles needed 9.0 innings to decide a victor. Riley Zana's double in the top of the ninth inning propelled the Chants to their second victory of the day (5-3) as the sophomore drove home Keirstin Roose and Jay Wrightsman.

JAGUARS' LAST TME OUT
South Alabama was set to face Georgia State, on March 24-27, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the series was canceled.

The Jaguars fell to Texas State on March 20 by a score of 3-0 in the series finale at Jaguar Field. South Alabama took the first two games of the series by a combined score of 9-1 against the Bobcats.

ALL-TIME SERIES
Coastal Carolina and South Alabama have met 14 previous times with the Jaguars holding an 8-6 advantage over the Chants. The two teams first met on February 13, 2009, in a neutral site match matchup – USA tallied a 12-1 victory. Most recently, CCU dropped the series finale on March 21, 2021 – an 11-1 (5 inn.) contest.

HOME RUN CLINIC

The Chanticleers have hit 45 total home runs while opponents have hit just 28. So far this season, 10 different Coastal players have hit home runs. Keirstin Roose and Iyanla De Jesus lead the offensive efforts for Coastal as each have recorded eight homers. Riley Zana sits second in the home run race as she has tallied seven homers this season.

Abbey Montoya and Payton Ebersole have each recorded five, while Maddy Jennings (4), Madison Hudson (4), Makiya Thomas (2), Jay Wrightsman (1), and Abby Jankay (1) have also contributed to Coastal's home run tally.

ONE HIT WONDER
For just the second time in her career, Beasley-Polko allowed just one hit on the road against Winthrop on March 29. The graduate student tallied this feat just once before, on May 7, 2021, with an 8-0 victory against App State.
