CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team will return home this week for a midweek contest against the Virginia Tech Hokies with the opening draw scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday, April 13.
The Chanticleers are 5-7 on the year and 1-1 in the ASUN, having dropped their last contest against the No. 22 nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins last Sunday in Baltimore, Md.
The Hokies enter play with an 8-7 record and 2-5 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play, including losses to ASUN members Jacksonville and Liberty earlier this season.
COASTAL vs. VIRGINIA TECH HISTORY
Wednesday's contest will be the fourth meeting between the two teams with Virginia Tech holding a 3-0 advantage in the overall series. The Hokies claimed a 10-6 road victory over the Chanticleers in the last meeting on February 22, 2015, to remain unbeaten in the series.
ABOUT COASTAL
The Chants' scoring attack is led by
Lauren Cremen (21 goals),
Avery McIlwaine (17 goals),
Kayla Downey (16 goals), and
Megan Bozzi (15 goals), while
Abi George and
Avery Snyder each have added 11 goals.
Hannah Demis and Downey are the top two assist leaders for the Chants with 18 and 15 assists, respectively, while three Chants in Snyder (28), McIlwaine (24), and
Abby Cooper (21) have combined for 73-of-157 draw controls to start the offensive attack.
Defensively, Coastal goalkeeper
Claire Martell has faced 312 shots and made 123 saves on the season.
Marissa Munson has caused 11 turnovers, while
Claudia Kelly and
Avery Whitehead chipped in with nine and seven caused turnovers, respectively. Martell (22), Munson (15), and Kelly (12) have scooped up 49-of-153 ground balls so far this season.
ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH
Virginia Tech is led by Sarah Lubnow with 37 goals while Olivia Vergano and Sophie Student have chipped in with 34 and 33 scores, respectively. The Hokies' Whitney Liebler leads the team with 25 assists with Lubnow adding 16 assists on the season. Student and Vergano get the offense started having won 63 and 58 draw controls, respectively.
On the defensive end, Morgan Berman has started all 15 matches between the pipes and has made 97 saves while facing 350 shots. Jordan Tilley and Student have helped stop the opponents' offense from scoring by causing 20 and 16 turnovers, respectively, while Tilley (31), Student (30), Berman (26), and Mary Griffin (25) have grabbed a combined 112-of-247 ground balls.
