Coastal Snaps Campbell's Winning Streak, Wednesday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team used six different pitchers to down Campbell 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon to snap a six-game winning streak by the Camels at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

With the win, the Chants erased a three-game winless streak and improved to 15-20 overall and the Camels dropped to 20-12 overall with the loss.

Coastal handed Campbell just its third loss at home this season.

Makiya Thomas, Keirstin Rooseand Iyanla De Jesus proved to be the difference for the CCU as the top of the order went a combined 10-for-12 at the plate for the Chanticleers. Notably, De Jesus finished the contest a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate.

The Chants struck early, as Thomas singled through the left side before Roose singled past the pitcher to advance Thomas. De Jesus singled deep into left-field which advanced all runners and allowed Thomas to put CCU up 1-0. Roose would be tagged out on a run down before Abbey Montoya grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second, Claudia Ware laid down a bunt to give Campbell its first base runner of the day before Lindsey Hunt would ground out to CCU's Roose but advanced Ware to second. Kayla Fredendall singled to left to score Ware and make the score 1-1.

Coastal's Thomas singled up the middle to start the top of the third inning, before being caught trying to steal second base on a Roose strikeout. Riley Zana singled to centerfield followed by a De Jesus single to right field to move Zana to second. Montoya drew a walk on a 3-2 count to load the bases before Shae Schreckengost sent her first RBI of the season on a single to the centerfield gap and drove home Zana to give Coastal a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Roose recorded her second hit of the afternoon, as the true freshman singled to left-centerfield before De Jesus sent a single over the second baseman to advance Roose. Montoya reached on a fielder's choice as De Jesus was out at second on the play, while Roose advanced to third. With two outs, Schreckengost recorded her second RBI single of the day, this time to left field, which allowed Roose to cross home plate and make the score 3-1 in favor of CCU.

Abby Jankay reached second on a Campbell throwing error before advancing to third by Payton Ebersole's ground out to the second baseman. Thomas recorded her first RBI of the day, as sent her third single of the day to right field and to drive home Jankay to make the score 4-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hunt sent a leadoff single to center field to start Campbell's final push before Tyra Parker drew her third walk of the season to put runners on first and second but the Camel's left both stranded.

De Jesus (1-2) picked up her first win of the season in the circle, as the junior saw 1.0 inning of work and allowed just two hits, one run, and struck out one. Nicolette Picone saw 2.0 innings of work for the Chants, the most of any pitcher, and recorded one strikeout.

Coastal will now return to Sun Belt Conference play as the Chanticleers get set for a three-game weekend series at Georgia Southern, April 8-10 in Statesboro, Ga.
