MOBILE, ALA. – The Coastal Carolina softball team continued its Sun Belt Softball Tournament run on Friday afternoon as the Chanticleers took down No. 2 seed and host South Alabama, 3-0, in an elimination game at Jaguar Field.
With the win, CCU improved to 24-28 overall. With the loss, South Alabama's season came to an end with an overall record of 25-21 and a 16-6 Sun Belt Conference record.
The Chanticleers have a quick turnaround as they will play the winner of No. 4 seed Troy and No. 7 seed Georgia State at 8:00 p.m. ET, Friday night.
South Alabama's Victoria Ortiz sent a single deep into centerfield in the top of the first before Kamdyn Kvistad was hit by a pitch which advanced Ortiz but a Jaguar fly out left both runners stranded.
Makiya Thomas sent a leadoff single into center field before the Tacoma, Wash, native stole second base.
Riley Zana blasted a single to center field to advance Thomas to third followed by a
Keirstin Roose RBI groundout that advanced all runners and put the Chants up 1-0.
In the top of the second, Kassidy Wilcox blooped a single into left field followed by an Emma Kropp sacrifice bunt to advance Wilcox one base. Allie Hughen was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second but South Alabama would leave both runners on base for the second time.
With two outs in the bottom of the third,
Abbey Montoya singled to left field before the senior stole second base. In her second at bat of the day, Zana rocketed an RBI double to right centerfield to plate Montoya to make the score 2-0.
In the top of the fourth, back-to-back walks would put runners on first and second for the Jaguars followed by a wild pitch that advanced them each one base before
Mady Volpe's third strikeout of the afternoon ended the inning.
Madison Hudson singled to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth followed a
Shae Schreckengost single past second base which advanced Hudson to second. However, a Chanticleer fly out would leave both runners stranded.
Mackenzie Brasher singled to shortstop before stealing second base in the top of the fifth inning for the Jaguars. Kvistad reached base for the third time after being hit by a pitch.
Thomas singled past third base before she was caught stealing. Zana singled past second but would be stranded by a Chanticleer line drive to third.
Jaguars' Belle Wolfenden drew her second walk in as many at bats before advancing to second on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth. Notably, South Alabama would strand its 10th base runner of the day on second as Volpe picked up her fifth strikeout to end the inning.
For the second time in as many games,
Abby Jankay belted her fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to record the Chants' final run of the day to make the score, 3-0.
In circle circle, Volpe (3-5) picked up her third win of the season as the freshman tallied her second complete game and first career shutout. The Lansdale, Pa. native struck out five in 7.0 innings of work.
