Chants only eight strokes out of second
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team sits in a tie for 8th place at the Evie Odom Invitational after shooting an 11-over 291 in the first round at the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Va., on Friday.
Junior Sara Sarrion was the only Chanticleer to finish the round under par after carding a one-under 69 (33-36) on the par-70, 5,824-yard course. She is tied for 8th heading into Saturday's second round.
Varatkarn Kunkaew shot a two-over 72 (35-37) and is tied for 29th. Luisa Gibson is tied for 40th after shooting a four-over 74 (38-36), while Hannah Karg is tied for 60th after carding a six-over 76 (40-36), and Carolina Hortian finished tied for 72nd after her eight-over 78 (44-34).
Scoring was tough on the day as UCF was the only team to finish under par as its seven-under 273 leads the field.
Only 15 stokes separate the rest of the field led by Kent State at three-over 283. Chattanooga is third at five-over 285 with Indiana fourth at seven-over 287, and Missouri is fifth at eight-over 288.
The College of Charleston is sixth at nine-over 289, and Furman is seventh with a 10-over 290. Sacramento State and East Carolina are tied with CCU at 11-over 291.
Penn State and Old Dominion are tied for 11th after shooting a 14-over 294, with James Madison standing 13th with a 16-over 296. North Florida (+17, 297) and Notre Dame (+18, 298) round out the field.
