COLUMBIA, S.C. – In the first of four consecutive road matches, the Coastal Carolina women's tennis team fell 4-0 at South Carolina on Friday afternoon at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C.
The loss dropped CCU to 0-3 on the season, while with the win, the Gamecocks improved to 2-3.
USC took an early 1-0 match lead by scoring wins at the No. 1 and 2 doubles positions, as Ayana Akli and Gracie Mulville defeated CCU's
Megan Hopton and
Anna Babayan 6-2, while Ana Cruz and Allie Gretkowski beat
Lille Steryous and
Tatum Burger 6-3.
The third doubles match would go unfinished with South Carolina's duo of Sarah Hamner and Alice Otis in front of Coastal's team of
Victoire De Samucewicz and
Jesse Hollins 5-3.
In singles play, the Gamecocks secured the 4-0 match win with straight-set wins on courts No. 1, 4, and 6.
On court No. 2, CCU's Babayan dominated in her first set with a 6-0 win over Mulville but dropped the second set 6-2. The match would go unfinished with Babayan leading the third set 1-0.
In the other two unfinished matches, Hopton trailed 6-1, 5-4 at the No. 3 spot, while Hollins was down 7-5, 3-2 in her bout on court No. 5.
Coastal will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 19, at Clemson (Feb. 19) at 4 p.m. ET.
