Coastal Softball to Open Conference Play Versus James Madison this Weekend

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team (23-4) will open up Sun Belt Conference play in a three-game series versus James Madison at St. John Stadium this weekend, March 17-19.
 
Lookin' Back
  • The Chants fell to 23-4 on the season after the North Carolina Tar Heels downed CCU 8-6 on Tuesday.
  • Abbey Montoya hit her first home run of the season to drive in two RBIs and give Coastal a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • The Chanticleers matched their season high of two sacrifice flies in one game.
  • Delaney Keith struck her second triple of the season, which ranks her tied for fourth in the Sun Belt and tied for 20th in the nation.
 
Conference History
  • CCU joined the Sun Belt in 2017 and has posted a 48-84 overall conference record.
  • The Chanticleers finished tied for second place in the regular season back in 2020.
  • Prior to the Sun Belt, the Chants won eight regular season championships and six tournament championships in the Big South Conference.
 
Scouting the Opponent
  • James Madison is 13-6 overall and coming off a 5-0 loss to Duke on Wednesday.
  • This will be the Dukes' fifth-straight game on the road, going 3-1 in those contests.
  • Hannah Shifflett has posted a .314 batting average and is tied for 20th in the nation with three triples on the season.
  • The starting pitcher for the Dukes, Alissa Humphrey is ranked 14th in the nation with 101 strikeouts and has a 2.30 ERA.
  • Offensively, the Dukes have a .284 batting average with 20 home runs, seven triples, and 95 RBIs.
 
History Against
  • Head coach Kelley Green will be looking to add a win to her 0-2 record versus JMU.
  • CCU has a 1-4 all-time series record against the Dukes and is currently on a two-game losing streak.
  • Coastal's only victory against James Madison came back in 2007 when the Chants won an 11-10 battle in eight innings on the last day of the three-game series.
