Chants Hit the Road for the Spring Games

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team (13-2) will hit the road this weekend for its first away contests at the Spring Games tournament in Madeira, Fla., March 3-5.

The Chanticleers will face Bethune-Cookman, Middle Tennessee, Hofstra, Central Michigan, and Creighton during the three-day event.

Scouting the Opponents

Bethune-Cookman
  • The Wildcats are 1-13 on the season with their lone win coming against Loyola, 4-1.
  • Bethune-Cookman has posted a .175 batting average, scoring just 28 runs in comparison to Coastal's 99 in the same amount of games.
  • The Chanticleers will have to stay alert since the Wildcats are 18-for-21 on stolen-base attempts.

Middle Tennessee
  • Middle Tennessee is the only other team in the tournament to have a winning record on the season at 11-3 overall.
  • Sophomore Laura Mealer leads the team with a .524 batting average, going 22-for-42, scoring 19 runs, recording one triple, three home runs, and 16 RBIs on the season so far.

Hofstra
  • Hofstra is currently 1-9 overall on the season but secured its first win of the year with a 6-5 victory against California Baptist last Sunday.
  • Newcomer Emma Brennan leads the team with a 2.68 ERA, giving up six earned runs and recording eight strikeouts in 15.2 innings of work in the circle.

Central Michigan
  • Central Michigan has played the fewest number of games out of all the teams competing at the Spring Games, going 3-6 overall.
  • The Chippewas logged two wins against Delaware State during their opening weekend and beat Illinois State, 5-4, last Saturday.
  • Abbey Tolmie is atop the team with a .467 batting average, scoring nine runs and driving in three RBIs for the Chippewas. The Chants should also look out for Alexander Kelsey and Allyssa Hollo, who each drove in eight RBIs on the season to date.

Creighton
  • The Bluejays are currently 6-8 overall on the season and have won their last three contests.
  • Graduate student Kailey Wilson is a strong force in the Creighton offensive lineup, smashing four home runs while recording eight runs, six doubles, and 13 RBIs in her 14 appearances.

History Against
  • The Chants have only played Bethune-Cookman once in their history back in 2015 when CCU fell 2-1.
  • Coastal has a 4-7 overall record versus Middle Tennessee, however, the Chants have dominated in their last two meetings, defeating the Blue Raiders, 2-0 and 10-0.
  • The Chanticleers have a 3-0 overall record against Central Michigan. CCU last faced the Chippewas at St. John Stadium in 2022 where they took a 9-3 victory. Riley Zana helped contribute to this win, hitting two doubles which each drove in an RBI. Keirstin Roose also added to the scoreboard hitting a two-run homer over the right-center field wall.
  • This will be Coastal's first encounter with the Creighton Bluejays.
  • Hofstra has won the previous three match-ups with CCU, defeating the Chants 2-0 in their most recent game in 2015. The Chanticleers' only victory against the Pride came in their first meeting in 1993 where they won 7-6.
