Chants Open the Road Portion of Schedule Versus Campbell

Women’s lacrosse played eight straight matches at home

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team will take to the road for the first time in the 2023 season, as the Chanticleers will travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels on Saturday, March 25 at 1 p.m. ET.
 
Coastal enters the contest at 5-3 overall after rebounding for a 21-6 home win over the Marist Red Fox to close out the eight-game season-opening home stretch, while the Fighting Camels enter play at 4-3 on the year.
 
ASUN OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kayla Downey recorded a combined 14 points and an 85.7 shots on goal percentage in leading the Chants to a 1-1 record last week. She tallied two goals and two assists in the defeat to the Harvard Crimson on March 14 and rebounded to lead the Chanticleers back into the win column with five goals and five assists versus Marist three days later on March 17.
 
The Babylon, N.Y., native set a new program record for the most points in a single game with 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists) in the win over the Red Foxes.
 
COASTAL vs. CAMPBELL HISTORY
The Chanticleers lead the all-time series 7-2 and are 4-0 on the road versus Campbell. In the last meeting, however, Coastal Carolina fell 8-7 at home to the Camels in March 2021.
 
ABOUT COASTAL
The CCU offense is led by Downey (25 goals, 17 assists) with 42 points, while Avery McIlwaine (17 goals, 7 assists), Hope Steuerwald (17 goals, 1 assist), and Avery Snyder (5 goals, 12 assists) are close behind with 24, 18, and 17 points, respectively. The offense has been ignited by Devin Rybacki and McIlwaine, as the duo has won 24 and 23 draw controls each.
 
Defensively, the Chants are anchored by their starting goalkeeper Claire Martell, who has started all eight contests. The redshirt junior goalie has stopped 57 shots and allowed 62 goals in almost 385 minutes in the cage on the season. Claudia Kelly has forced nine turnovers, while Martell has grabbed 19 groundballs to help return possession back to the offense.
 
ABOUT CAMPBELL
Campbell is led by Sam Bischoff (25 goals, 4 assists) and Rasa Welsh (9 goals, 16 assists) with 29 and 25 points, respectively. Joslin Hanbury (11 goals, 4 assists), Delaney Nicolaus (9 goals, 5 assists), and Ally Heath (10 goals, 3 assists) have chipped in with 15, 14, and 13 points each. Bischoff often gets the offense started by winning 24 draw controls for the Fighting Camels to lead the team.
 
Defensively, Campbell has split time with goalies Natalie Mellen and Emma Strickland both playing in all seven contests. Mellen (39 goals allowed, 25 saves) and Strickland (42 goals allowed, 34 saves) have combined to allow 81 goals and make 59 saves in the 186 shots faced. Rebekah Taylor leads the team with 12 caused turnovers, while Shae Fitzgerald has scooped up a team-high 21 groundballs.
