Women’s tennis had won 12-straight matches

MOBILE, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team had its winning streak snapped at 12 consecutive matches on Saturday afternoon, as the Chanticleers suffered a 4-3 road loss at South Alabama in Sun Belt Conference play.

With the loss, the Chants fell to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the Sun Belt on the season. USA improved to 13-3 overall and 3-2 in league play with the win.

The Jaguars moved to 8-0 at home on the season, while the loss was the first for the Chants since Feb. 19 at Clemson.

For the first time since that loss at Clemson on Feb. 19, the Chanticleers did not come away with the doubles point as the Jaguars secured the 1-0 lead with wins on courts No. 1 and 3.

The Coastal duo of Anna Babayan and Megan Hopton had its 12-match winning streak snapped with a 6-1 loss to USA's Tereza Dejnozkova and Luminita Tutunaru on court No. 1, while Jesse Hollins and Victoire De Samucewicz suffered their first loss of the season in doubles play with a 6-2 defeat on court No. 2 to Otoha Aoki and Chems Doha Zeghlouli.

In singles play, the Chants dropped the first match on court No. 1 to fall behind 2-0 in the match before De Samucewicz picked up a 7-5, 6-0 win over Nikola Novotna on court No. 2 to put the visitors on the scoreboard.

With a 2-1 match lead, the Jaguars secured the match win with back-to-back victories on court No. 3 (6-4, 6-3) and No. 4 (6-4, 1-6, 6-0) and took a 4-1 lead.

The Chants went on to post wins in the final two singles bouts, as Hollins was up 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 on court No. 5 when her opponent Doha Zeghlouli was forced to retire, while Lilie Steryous ousted Akoi in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 on court No. 6 to put the final score at 4-3.

Hollins extended her singles winning streak to 10 consecutive matches, while Steryous' streak has now reached five-straight wins.

Coastal will look to rebound with a Sun Belt Conference match at Southern Miss tomorrow, April 2, at 11 a.m. ET. The Chanticleers will not return home until April 14 when they will host No. 24 Old Dominion at 10 a.m. ET.
