ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fell 14-13 to ASUN Conference newcomer Lindenwood on the road on Sunday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo.
The loss dropped Coastal to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Lions improved to 7-7 on the year and 2-2 in ASUN action with the win.
Coastal Carolina's
Kayla Downey (3 goals, 4 assists) and
Riley Glackin (3 goals, 1 assist) led the offensive attack with seven and four points, while
Maddie Bates (2 goals) and
Avery McIlwaine (2 goals, 1 assist) each scored multiple goals. Along with Downey, McIlwaine, and Glackin,
Sydney McClure (2 assists),
Alyson Mascolo (1 goal, 1 assist), and
Abi George (1 assist) aided on teammates' goals.
Defensively, the Chants made 13 saves between
Claire Martell (7 saves) and
Charlotte Sadler (6 saves), while each allowed seven goals in their 30 minutes between the pipes. Coastal caused five turnovers with
Gabrielle Beckett,
Jordan Gertz,
Lily Wallace, McIlwaine, and Downey all forcing one turnover each.
Lindenwood was paced by Logann Eldredge with nine points on eight goals and one assist, while Meredith Parry and Elisabeth Ralph added two goals apiece. Lexy Biller won a game-high nine draw controls to give the offense possession.
The Lions' Eleanor Kast picked up the win with seven stops while allowing 13 goals. Isabella Rulapaugh scooped up a team-high three groundballs, while Natalie Gane and Eldredge caused two turnovers each to give possession back to their offense.
The Chants opened the scoring in the opening period, as McIlwaine put the Women in Teal in front 1-0 with just 1:11 expiring from the game clock. McIlwaine needed just another minute to put Coastal up 2-0 with the help of Downy. Just 47 seconds later, Bates teamed up with Downey for the woman-up goal to lead 3-0.
With 11:13 remaining on the game clock in the first period, CCU took a 4-0 lead as Downey tallied her first goal of the game off the assist from McClure.
Lindenwood's Eldredge opened the scoring for the Lions with 8:42 left in the first quarter, only to see Coastal's
Monica Manley push the visitor's advantage back to four 57 seconds later at 5-1. The final six minutes of the opening period belonged to the home team, as Lindenwood closed the first quarter with a 3-0 run to cut the Coastal lead to 5-4.
In the second quarter, the Lions added two more tallies for their first lead of the game at 6-5. Coastal's
Bethany Bruck evened the game at 6-6 with 6:32 left in the first half and was followed by Mascolo's lone goal of the match to lead 7-6. However, Lindenwood answered with the equalizer on Eldredge's fourth goal of the game. With time running down until the halftime intermission, CCU's Glackin beat the Lions' defense to give the Chants an 8-7 advantage at the break.
With five minutes of action expiring from the third quarter, Coastal pushed its lead to three at 10-7 on back-to-back goals by Glackin to complete the hat trick. After several missed opportunities by both teams, Lindenwood pulled to within one score with two quick goals to trail 10-9 with 15 minutes left to play in regulation.
In the final period, the Lions pulled even at 10-10 on Parry's fifth goal of the season with 12:51 left on the game clock. Coastal retook the lead with 9:05 remaining on the game clock at 11-10 as Downey filled the back of the net off the assist from McClure. The back-and-forth scoring continued, however, as Lindenwood needed just 33 seconds to knot the game up at 11-11 on Eldredge's fifth goal of the day.
Nearly two minutes later, CCU's Downey put Coastal back in front at 12-11, just to see the home team battle back to tie the score at 12-12 on a tally by Eldredge with five minutes left in regulation. Coastal took its final lead of the contest 1:12 later, as Downey found Bates wide open in front of the cage to lead 13-12.
However, the Lions' Eldredge tied the game at 13-13 with her seventh goal of the day with 3:03 left in regulation. With just under one minute left on the game clock, Eldredge tallied her eighth goal of the day to give the home-standing Lions the 14-13 win.
Coastal will close out the road portion of the 2023 ASUN Conference schedule, as the Chanticleers will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., on Thursday, April 20, versus Jacksonville, before heading to DeLand, Fla., for a matchup with Stetson on Saturday, April 22. The opening draws are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and noon ET, respectively.
