JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina men's and women's track & field teams combined to record 16 top-15 finishes on Saturday, highlighted by several outstanding performances for both teams at the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Chanticleers will now set their sights on the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships set for May 11-13 at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Women's Team
Highlighting day two of the East Coast Relays for the Coastal women's team was a total of seven top-15 finishes, led by the 4x100-meter relay team of
Sydney Clemens,
Alexis Glasco,
Amanda Kinloch, and
Kayla Sweeney crossing the finish line in first with a time of 44.68.
In the 100-meter hurdles, three Chants would have etched their names in the Coastal Carolina outdoor track & field all-time performance list had their times not been wind-aided (2.1 or higher).
Glasco placed fourth in the event with her time of 12.83 (3.2), which would have crushed her school record of 13.15 (0.9). Clemens' time of 13.19 (2.4) placed her sixth overall and would have been the second-best time in CCU's history, while Kinloch's time of 13.52 (2.5) was good enough for 14th overall and would have been the fifth-best in CCU's annals.
Recording a ninth-place finish in the 100-meters with her time of 11.28 (2.3) was Sweeney, which would have been the second-fastest time in the all-time performance list if not wind-aided, while sophomore
Camryn Lorick turned in a 10th-place finish in the high jump event, clearing the bar at 1.66 meters.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Canetto,
Amilia Wise-Sweat, Kinloch, and
Lauren Gordon finished ninth overall with a season-best time of 3:47.47.
On top of all that, fellow Chant
Alyssa Smith turned in a personal-best time of 15.10 (1.7) to finish 39th overall in the 100-meter hurdles event, while Lorick turned in a personal-best time of 12.08 (0.7) to place 39th in the 100-meter dash.
Also setting personal records on Saturday on the women's side were Canetto (56.05) and
Brianna Tillman (58.21) in the 400-meters and
Mia Lewis (11.80m) in the triple jump event.
Men's Team
On the men's side, the Chants totaled nine top-15 finishes, headlined by junior
Tyler Graves and his third-place finish and the second-fastest time in CCU history at 13.75 (1.7) in the 110-meter hurdles.
Graves led a quartet of Chants in the 110-meter hurdles event, as
Braydon Bennett (14.02 (1.7)) placed sixth,
Albrey Gossett (14.18 (3.7)) finished seventh, and
Jaquon Williams (14.24 (1.7)) crossed the finish line eighth.
In the 100-meter dash, the Chants had four runners that would have written their names in the top 10 of CCU's record books had their times, like the women, not been wind-aided.
Garrett Wilkins crossed the finish line with a time of 10.47 (3.3), just ahead of
Ashlund Dixon and his time of 10.54 (3.3). Their times would have ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in Coastal's all-time performance list if not wind-aided.
The duo finished just ahead of
DeVonte Harris with his time of 10.57 (2.8) and newcomer
Deondre Hardy at 10.58 (3.3), which would have been ninth and 10th overall on the performance list had the wind been under 2.1 miles per hour.
Posting top-five finishes on the day were both the 4x400 and 4x100-meter relay units. The 4x400-meter relay team of Graves,
Brendan Kovar, Wilkins, and
Robert Johnson finished third with a time of 3:13.88, while the 4x100-meter relay group of Gossett, Hardy, Wilkins, and Dixon placed fifth overall with a time of 40.79.
Kovar added a 15th-place showing in the 400-meters with a time of 48.22, while throwers
Major Chestnut (44.55m) and
Aaron Keeler (51.59m) turned in 12th-place finishes in the discus and javelin throws, respectively, on the day.
Two other Chants set personal records on Saturday in
Isaiah Thomas (1:56.86) in the 800-meters and
Chance Tressler (36.69m) in the discus throw.
