Coastal Carolina Women’s Lacrosse Trio Named to the CSC Academic All-District At-Large Team

Chanticleers getting it done on the field and in the classroom
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team had three student-athletes in Kayla Downey, Avery McIlwaine, and Monica Manley named to the 2023 Academic All-District Women's At-Large District team, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced on Tuesday evening.
With the honor, the trio joins former Chant Megan Bozzi, who was named 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large first team last year, as the only academic team honorees in the program's young history.
Downey was named the ASUN Player of the Year for her performance on the field by leading the ASUN and the Chanticleers in points with 98 points on the season with 56 goals and 42 assists, while also being tabbed as ASUN All-Conference first team and ASUN All-Academic team. Downey was named the ASUN Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks on March 14 and March 21.
The Babylon, N.Y., native set the single-season goal mark with her second goal of the day in the ASUN Women's Lacrosse Championship semifinal game. Downey also recorded a school-record 10 points on five goals and five assists in the win over Marist on March 17. She tallied three or more goals in 13 of the 19 games she appeared.
She graduated in May 2023 with a bachelor's degree in physical education with a 3.56-grade point average (GPA).
McIlwaine, who was tabbed the ASUN Midfielder of the Year, was second on the team with 54 points, 35 goals, and 47 draw controls, while also being named to both the ASUN All-Conference first team and ASUN All-Academic team. The Alpharetta, Ga., native started in all 19 games and scored one or more points in 18 consecutive contests, including a season-high six points twice versus Elon and Vanderbilt.
She is maintaining a 4.0 GPA while working on her bachelor's degree in recreation and sport management.
Manley, who earned a spot on the ASUN All-Academic team for the second straight season, scored 24 goals and assisted on six tallies for 30 points. Manley helped the offense get started by winning 37 draw controls, which was third on the team. On the season, she recorded two hat tricks, three goals versus Vanderbilt and five goals and one assist in the final road contest of the season at Stetson.
The West Chester, Pa., native is holding a 3.96 GPA in biology.
