Taylor has eight birdies in the opening round

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University's men's golf team shot a seven-under 281 in Sunday's first round of the Golfweek Challenge to finish sixth after the opening 18 holes.

After picking up double-bogeys in two of the first three holes, reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Seth Taylor recorded seven birdies over his next 14 holes, including four consecutive birdies on holes nine through 12, to finish with a three-under 69 (38-31). He will go into the second round tied for 12th place.

Jack Lee shot a two-under 70 (39-31). The freshman had a tough opening nine holes, shooting a two-over 39. He turned that around with four birdies on the back nine and finished the round tied for 22nd.

Connor Bennink (34-37) and Carlos Garre (34-37) each shot a one-under 71 in the opening round to finish tied for 35th, while Garrett Cooper shot a one-over 73 (37-36) and is tied for 55th.

The rest of the Chanticleers were playing as individuals in the event with Ludvig Eriksson leading that group with a three-under 69 (35-34). He picked up his score with six birdies, three bogeys and nine pars for his round. He is tied for 12th entering tomorrow's action.

Trace McDonald completed first-round action with a two-under 70 (35-35). He is tied for 22nd. Brady Duval (35-37) and Owen Kim (37-35) each finished tied for 47th after shooting an even-par 72 in Sunday's round, while Trey Crenshaw finished 78th with a five-over 77 (43-34).

There was a lot of competition on the course with only 10 shots separating the top six teams. Loyola Marymount finished Sunday's round at 17-under (271), just one shot ahead of Washington State's 16-under (272). Sun Belt Conference member Arkansas State stands third at 14-under (274), while Richmond and Western Carolina round out the top five tied for fourth with a nine-under (279).

CCU leads the second five with its seven-under (281), just one shot ahead of Jacksonville State, Stephen F. Austin, and Jacksonville, who each finished six-under (282).

New Orleans is 10th at three-under (285) with Wright State (-1, 287) and Charleston Southern (-1, 287) tied for 11th, and Presbyterian (+3, 291) and Eastern Kentucky (+3, 291) rounding out the field.
