Chants to Battle Duke and UNC

Volleyball will begin Sun Belt Conference play next week

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team will travel to North Carolina to close out the non-conference portion of its schedule. The Chanticleers will visit the Duke Blue Devils on Sept. 15 in Durham, N.C. On Sunday, Sept. 17, CCU will take on the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.

ABOUT COASTAL
The Chanticleers are 5-5 on the season and are currently riding a two-game winning streak. CCU swept the Virginia Cavaliers before returning to the HTC Center and knocking off regional rival UNCW 3-1 last Tuesday.
 
Jasmine Rivest leads the Chants with 109 kills, freshman setter Jalyn Stout has tallied 91 kills, redshirt junior Lauren Malone has added 82 kills, junior transfer Cagla Bengi leads the team with 280 assists, and fellow newcomer Sydney Lewis has 97 digs. Sophomore Valentina Varani leads the team with 36 blocks.
 
ABOUT DUKE
Duke enters the weekend with a 7-2 record with just two matches going to five sets. This will be the fifth meeting between the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Blue Devils with Duke holding a 4-0 series lead.
 
The Blue Devils' offense is paced by Kerry Keefe and Gracie Johnson with 110 and 88 kills, respectively, while Emma Worthington leads the team with 264 assists.
 
Defensively, Madison Bryant leads Duke with 126 digs, while Worthington and Johnson have 71 and 70 digs, respectively. Jess Robingson and Lizzie Fleming are holding the front line with 32 and 25 blocks, respectively.
 
ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA
The Tar Heels sit at 4-3 overall on the season after dropping a pair of matches to Michigan and Michigan State. This will be the fifth meeting with UNC leading the overall series 4-0.
 
North Carolina's attack is led by Mabrey Shaffmaster with 91 kills, while Emani' Foster and Romani Thurman have added 79 and 54 put downs, respectively. Anita Babic (105) and Maria Miggins (99) make sure that the Tar Heels are in position with a combined 204 assists.
 
Sadie Swift (27), Thurman (22) and Kay Merkler (21) are the only Tar Heels with 20 or more blocks. Maddy May leads the team with 104 digs.
