BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team came up just short, falling to the Campbell Fighting Camels 1-0 on Tuesday evening in Buies Creek, N.C.
It was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings, with
Nicolette Picone allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters, while Campbell's Megan Gregory did not allow a single hit.
The Fighting Camels broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning after a Coastal Carolina fielding error allowed Allyiah Swiney to cross home plate and give Campbell a 1-0 lead.
The Chanticleers looked to rally in the top of the sixth inning when
Brie Normandin and
McKennah Metzger each reached on singles. However, the Campbell defense held firm to close out the inning unscathed.
Coastal battled until the final pitch, putting runners on first and second with a single and a walk in the top of the seventh inning, but the Fighting Camels secured the final out to preserve the 1-0 victory.
The Chanticleers will return to St. John Stadium for a three-game series against the Georgia State Panthers on April 11-13.
