CONWAY, S.C. — Cliff Davis scored 22 points and James Madison held off Coastal Carolina 67-65 in a Sun Belt Conference game Wednesday night at the HTC Center.
Joshua Beadle had a game-high 31 points for Coastal Carolina (16-12, 8-7 Sun Belt), which erased an eight-point second-half deficit and led by five with 7:40 remaining before the Dukes closed on a 15-8 run.
The teams were tied 32-32 at halftime before James Madison (15-13, 7-8 Sun Belt) opened the second half with a 10-3 run to take a 40-35 lead. The Dukes later pushed the margin to 50-42 with 12:49 to play.
Coastal answered with a 15-0 run.
AJ Dancler hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 50, and Beadle followed with a 3 to put the Chanticleers ahead 53-50. Beadle's jumper and two free throws extended the lead to 57-52.
James Madison regained the lead when Davis hit a 3-pointer with 3:38 remaining to make it 62-61. After two free throws by Justin McBride with 49 seconds left, Beadle answered with two free throws to pull Coastal within 66-65.
Kose Egbule made one of two free throws with seven seconds remaining. Beadle was fouled with 0.4 seconds left but missed the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, and James Madison secured the rebound as time expired.
"It's unfortunate we didn't win, but that's what basketball and getting close to March should be like," Coastal Carolina coach
Justin Gray said. "I'm proud of the fight they had, and we'll have another chance to play them next week."
"Those free throws at the end of the game are not why we lost the game," Gray added. "There were so many plays within the game where we had breakdowns."
RaSheed Jones added 10 points for Coastal Carolina.
Reggie Hill had 11 rebounds and
Nadjrick Peat finished with seven rebounds and four blocks, while Bradley Douglas and Gabe Newhof scored nine points apiece for the Dukes.
Coastal Carolina plays its final home game of the season Saturday, Feb. 21, against Marshall at the HTC Center.
