CONWAY, S.C. — The Coastal Carolina softball team went undefeated on day two of the Beach Chicken Brawl. The Chants beat Binghamton 8-6 in game one before defeating Saint Joseph's 11-3.
Game One: Coastal 8, Binghamton 6
Coastal took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs on a
Hannah Bendle RBI single and a groundout.
Binghamton closed the gap to 2-1 in the top of the second, scoring on a CCU fielding error.
The Chants' bats exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning, as they tallied five runs on a walk, a pair of singles, and a double to extend the lead to 7-1.
In the top of the fifth, Binghamton capitalized on two singles and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, then brought in two runs on back-to-back walks to cut the deficit to 7-3.
CCU added one more run in the bottom of the fifth when
Brie Normandin delivered an RBI single to push Coastal's advantage to 8-3.
The Bearcats clawed one run back in the top of the sixth when Maddy Dodig hit an RBI single to make the score 8-4.
Binghamton continued to battle in the top of the seventh, as Emma Lawson belted a two-run home run over the center-field wall to trim the deficit to 8-6, but Coastal secured the final two outs to halt the comeback attempt.
Abby Henderson improved to 5-5 in the circle, allowing three runs while striking out four batters over 4.2 innings of work.
Game Two: Coastal 11, Saint Joseph's 3
Coastal wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when
Delaney Keith hammered a two-run home run over the right-center field wall and
McKennah Metzger roped a two-run single to give the Chants a 4-0 lead.
Coastal extended its lead in the bottom of the third inning when
Kaelin Cash launched an opposite field home run over the right field fence to put the Chants up 5-0.
Saint Joseph's narrowed Coastal's lead to 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of a Lauren Stalica two-run single and a Gianna Muhaw RBI single.
McKennah Metzger and
Livi Payne each hit RBI doubles in the bottom of the fifth inning to drive in three runs to push the Chants ahead 8-3.
The Chants put the game to rest in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cash and Metzger smashed back-to-back home runs to secure the 11-3 run-rule victory.
Metzger earned her first win in the circle allowing just three runs in a complete game.
