MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Senior
Max Bengtsson tied the Coastal Carolina men's golf program record with a 9-under par 63 to lead the Chanticleers' surge Monday at The Michael A. Marino Classic at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
Behind Bengtsson's historic round, Coastal posted an 11-under team score in the second round to move into fifth place at 9-under par through 36 holes. The Chanticleers began the day tied for seventh at 2-over following Sunday's opening round before making a strong move up the leaderboard.
Liberty and NC State are tied for first at 12-under, while Louisville and College of Charleston are tied for third at 11-under entering Tuesday's final round.
Round two resumed Monday morning after play was suspended Sunday evening following the completion of the front nine.
Bengtsson moved into first place individually at 9-under with his record-tying round. He made the turn at 5-under 31, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole, and added five back-nine birdies to match the lowest round in program history.
Sophomore
Drew Sykes is tied for 22nd at 1-under, while
Jack Lee and
Owen Kim, who is competing as an individual, are tied for 31st at 1-over. Freshmen
Lucas Arntsen and
Harrison James are tied for 29th at 2-over through two rounds.
Coastal will look to make a push for the tournament title in Tuesday's final round and will tee off at 9:30 a.m. alongside College of Charleston and Little Rock.
