Kjartan Sigurdsson joined Shaun Docking's men's soccer staff at Coastal Carolina University as an assistant coach in August 2014.
Sigurdsson came to Docking's staff after spending the 2013 and a portion of the 2014 season playing professionally in Finland (GBK Kokkola) and in his native Iceland with UMF Selfoss.
In 2014 Sigurdsson helped the Chanticleers to the program's 12th Big South Tournament Championship and fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Chants, which went 7-1-1 in Big South play, finished the season 16-6-1 overall and ranked 22nd in the final NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll. The campaign also marked the fourth straight season the Chants hosted and won an NCAA Tournament First Round game. The Chanticleers recorded wins over two nationally ranked opponents in the first three game of the season and a seven-match win streak through the heart of the schedule.
The 2014 Chanticleers finished the season with 48 goals to rank second in the nation, while their 44 assists ranked fifth. The team racked up 140 total points to rank third in the country and averaged 2.09 goals per game. On the defensive end, the Chants held a 0.85 goals against average, ranking 39th in the nation.
Sigurdsson was a standout Chanticleer student-athlete during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He was the 2012 Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead the Chants to a 20-3-2 overall record, a NCAA Tournament third round appearance and a Big South regular season championship. In addition, he was named a first team All-Big South and a second team NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region selection. With Sigurdsson along the backline, the 2012 Chants conceded only 22 goals in 25 matches, finishing the season ranked 10th in the nation with a 0.48 shutout percentage.
In Sigurdsson's rookie season of 2011 in Conway, he earned Big South Freshman of the Year, first team All-Big South and All-Freshman team honors. That year, Sigurdsson helped the Chants to a NCAA Tournament second round appearance, an 18-4-0 overall record and a conference regular season title.
Prior to his time his time as a student-athlete in Conway, Sigurdsson played with Selfoss in the Icelandic highest division in 2010 and with Hamar in 2009. He also played and trained with the Icelandic National Team from U16 to U19 level.
Sigurdsson, a native of Fludir, Iceland, received his bachelor's degree from Coastal Carolina in 2013.
