Rex Carrell enters his first season as Associate Head Coach for women’s soccer at Coastal Carolina after spending the previous four years on staff at Tarleton State. Carrell joined the Texans in 2021 as part of CCU head coach Pete Cuadrado’s inaugural staff, becoming the first to serve in that role in program history.
During his tenure at Tarleton State, Carrell contributed across all areas of the program, including equipment operations, scheduling, on-campus recruiting, and day-to-day administrative duties. He played a key role in building the program from the ground up, helping assemble the team’s first 24-player recruiting class, assisted in the launch of its initial youth camps, while helping the program record the most wins by a start-up program since 2015.
The Texans reached new heights during the 2025 season with a record-setting campaign that included a 6-2-2 program best non-conference record. That season Carrell coached three All-WAC honorees, including Kaitlyn Flanagan (Second Team) and freshmen Zoe Ballard and Tori Lucksinger.
In 2024, Tarleton State advanced to its first conference tournament appearance, with four players earning All-WAC recognition. Mikayla Kendall was also named to the All-Pacific Region team. The team also set several single-season records including nine overall wins, three conference victories, a 0.95 goals-against average, eight shutouts, and 29 goals scored.
Prior to Tarleton State, Carrell spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Gustavus Adolphus College, where he was part of one of the most successful stretches in program history. In 2019, the team posted an 18-3-1 record, captured the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) conference regular season and tournament championships, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Round of 32. Carrell also played a key role in coaching two All-American selections in Matthew Gibbons and Cole Schwartz, five All-MIAC players, and four All-Region honorees.
Carrell also gained experience on the club level with Gretna Elite Academy’s U23 women’s team in Nebraska, where he worked with a roster filled with Division I talent and focused on goalkeeper development. The team finished as 2021 UWS Central Conference runners-up and he coached three all-conference first team selections.
He began his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant at Nebraska Wesleyan, where he assisted with operations, recruiting, and social media while completing his playing career as a midfielder and defender.
Carrell holds a U.S. Soccer National C License and a United Soccer Coaches Level 2 Goalkeeping Diploma. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Nebraska Wesleyan in 2019 and a master’s degree in sport administration from Arkansas State in 2020.
