Volleyball Sweeps UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC— Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Bennett’s 17 kills helped Coastal Carolina snap a four-game losing streak as the Chanticleers swept UNC Wilmington, 30-27, 30-28 and 30-22, in volleyball action Wednesday night at Hanover Hall.

With the win, Coastal improves to 6-14 while UNCW drops to 10-9 and extends its losing streak to five.

Both teams opened the match on fire, combining for 37 kills and just 10 hitting errors in a 30-27 Chant win. Despite out hitting Coastal in game two (.180-.118), UNCW committed four service errors as CCU held off the Seahawks, 30-28. In the finale, CCU erased an early 7-5 deficit and rallied for the win.

Sophomore outside hitter Carly Draudt and junior outside hitter Katie Knutson recorded 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Knutson added a game-high 20 digs, while Bennett chalked up 14 digs. Coastal setter freshman Sarah Bessmer handed out 44 assists.

Sophomore outside hitter Heather White’s 11 kills led UNCW and senior middle hitter Bailey Lee added 10. White led the Seahawks defensively with 13 digs. Sophomore setter Ginger Bradbury doled out 40 assists.

The Seahawks return to action Friday night with a Colonial Athletic Association match at Va. Commonwealth starting at 7 p.m. Coastal Carolina travels to UNC Asheville on Oct. 23 for a Big South match at 4 p.m.
