CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina won their sixth straight with a sweep of a doubleheader agianst UNC Wilmington, 4-0 and 8-1, Apr. 16. The Lady Chanticleers are now 30-13, surpassing last year’s win total of 28, while the Seahawks dropped to 17-29. Coastal also won five of the six meetings between the two squads this season.

Coastal got on the board with two in the bottom of the second. Freshman Kelly Feely had a one-out double to left center and senior Amanda DeGrendele moved her to third with a single to center. Freshman Sara Hostetler then drove in Feely with a single to center, and the bases were loaded after senior Kimberly Josephson’s single up the middle. The Lady Chants then scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0.

CCU added two more in the bottom of the sixth. DeGrendele led off with a double to left center and moved to third on a wild pitch. Josephson put runners on the corners with a bunt single and moved to second on a groundout. Senior Holly Lee then drove a triple to the warning track in left center, including a collision between two UNCW outfielders, and knocked in DeGrendele and Josephson to make it 4-0. Freshman Christine Doyle picked up her 16th win of the season, the eighth-best single-season total, going the distance and striking out eight in the two-hit effort.

In the second game, the Lady Chants again opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. With one out, senior Suzanne Kimbrell was hit by pitch and Feely made the Seahawks pay with her first home run of the season, over the center field fence, to give CCU a 2-0 lead.

UNCW came back in the top of the third, as Christina Elmore, after a leadoff single, scored on Tiffany Lindemann’s single to center field to cut the margin to 2-1. But Coastal added one of their own in the bottom of the third. The Lady Chants put together three hits, including senior Morgan Tolleson’s bad-hop single to third that scored Josephson, and went up 3-1. Coastal then loaded the bases with one down in the fourth, where Lee singled down the left field line to score Hostetler and Josephson and put the Lady Chants up 5-1.

Coastal picked up two more in the fifth on Josephson’s two-RBI single, scoring Kimbrell and Feely, making it 7-1. Lee capped the scoring with a solo shot to center field, her 11th of the year. With it, she also became the first-ever Coastal softball player to record 40 home runs in a career. Freshman Brittany Nelson got the victory, going to 7-4 on the year in her eighth complete game.

Josephson led the hit parade for Coastal, going 6-for-8 in the doubleheader, including three runs scored and two RBIs. Lee was 4-for-7, including the triple, home run and five RBIs.

The Lady Chanticleers, winners of 10 of their last 11, are off for a week until they travel to Charleston to take on the College of Charleston, Wed., Apr. 23 at 4 p.m. Coastal then returns home for the Big South regular season finale, hosting Winthrop, Sun., Apr. 27 at 2 p.m.
