Box Score Volleyball Upends UNC Wilmington, 3-1 More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University women's volleyball team earned its third consecutive victory on Tuesday night, Sept. 25, defeating UNC Wilmington 3-1 at Kimbel Arena. Game scores were 30-24, 30-25, 28-30, 30-12.
"The defensive effort by Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) was stellar," Head Coach Kristen Bauer said. "Serves by Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Andover Central), Meagan TraceyMegan Bickford (Olathe, Kan/Olathe South) really helped us win runs and points. Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) was just phenomenal from the outside."
Coastal came out strong in the first game, hitting .362 with 21 kills off 47 total attacks. The Lady Chanticleers' momentum carried through to the second game and withstood UNC Wilmington's .375 hitting percentage for game two. Coastal had to fend off a late four-point Seahawk run that cut the Lady Chants' lead from eight to four and made it 25-21. Possession of the game flip-flopped between the two teams before kills from Kimes and sophomore Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) gave Coastal a two-point run. Nyhof eventually ended the game with a kill to give Coastal a 2-0 lead in the match.
In game three, the Lady Chants saw a pair of four-point leads disappear. Midway through, UNC Wilmington knotted the game up at 16-all. The Seahawks later tied the match at 22-22 and then took the lead on an Anna Price kill. Coastal and UNC Wilmington fought for control of game three, but the Seahawks won the game to force game four.
The Lady Chanticleers dominated the final game, hitting .414 and forcing UNC Wilmington into hitting -.083. Wolf served five-straight points in the beginning of the game, while Tracey served the final four. Tracey had an ace on the final serve to end the match.
Kimes recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a match-high 21 kills and 10 digs. Also reaching double-digits in kills were Bickford with 15, senior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) with 12 and Nyhof with 10. Bickford also added a match-high four aces, with three in game two. Starbuck tallied 27 digs, while Tracey put up 57 assists.
Lindsey Strucko led the Seahawks with 11 kills. Ashlyn Morris has 19 digs, while Jill Hoeck totaled 36 assists.
Coastal Carolina returns to action on Friday, Sept. 28, when it hosts UNC Asheville. Match time is set for 7 p.m. The first 100 fans to the match will get a free Sonic Burger.
