ELON, N.C.- Despite double digit scoring performances by Sydnei Moss and Kira Carter, the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team fell to Elon 73-58 on Sunday, Nov. 21.
The loss drops the Chanticleers to 2-2 as Elon moves to 3-1 on the young season.
Elon jumped out to an early 10-4 lead to start the game thanks in large part to the shooting of guard Ali Ford who was responsible for five of the points. Coastal responded as Carter connected on a deep three pointer and freshman Shanika Maddox knocked down a free throw to cut the Elon lead down to two points with 12:33 to play in the half.
The Phoenix then put together a quick 12-0 run to pull away from the Chants with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half. During the run, Elon forced three Coastal turnovers all of which resulted in points for the home team.
The Chants had trouble getting to the basket as Elon built a 24 point heading into the half. Elon shot a 53.1 percent from the field in the stanza including 37.5 percent from behind the arc. Coastal was led in the half by Carter's five points and Katie White's three blocked shots.
Coastal Carolina was able to force two quick turnovers in the early segments of the second half that resulted in four points for the Chants. Katie Ahaus also knocked down a three to cap off a 7-0 Coastal run. However, Elon used a full court press to break the Chanticleers momentum and force two turnovers that led to five Phoenix points.
The Chants would put together three scoring runs of seven or more points in the second half, but each would ultimately be spoiled by Elon's up-tempo style of play that led to high percentage baskets in the paint.
After being down by a many as 31 in the second half, Coastal continued to fight back as the Chants went on a final 22-9 run to close the Elon lead to 15 points before running out of time in the game.
Coastal's 40 second half points ties the season high set in the season opening game against Southern Virginia. The Chanticleers' bench also finished with a season high 26 points.
Sydnei Moss finished with Coastal's first double-double of the season as she collected 11 points and 11 rebounds on the day. Freshman Alexx Puckett showed flashes of brilliance off the bench as she had the best game of her young career finishing with nine points and nine rebounds in 16 minutes of play.
Elon's Ali Ford led all scorers in the contest with 21 points on 7-18 shooting while Kelsey Evans pulled down a game high 18 rebounds to go along with her 18 points. .
The Chants finished shooting 34.3 percent from the field with a season high six three pointers, five of which came in the second half, in the game.
Coastal returns home to Kimbel Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 23 to host Campbell. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
