CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team added two more run-rule victories to its total for the season Saturday in the Chanticleer Showdown, notching an 11-1 win over Sacred Heart before overcoming an early deficit to beat Bucknell 11-3, both in five innings.
Coastal improved to 7-4, with six of the wins coming via the eight-run mercy rule, including three by double-digits.
In the win over Bucknell, Kory Hayden went 3 for 3 with two runs scored, Morgan Noad had two hits and three runs scored, while Kelsey Dominik and Kailey Mellen had two RBIs. The Chants totaled 10 hits as a team. Kiana Quolas (3-3) notched the win in the circle, allowing six hits, striking out five and walking none.
Bucknell took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first, loading the bases on a double, a fielder's choice and a single before getting a two-run single with one out.. However, Coastal answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning, using three hits, four walks and two Bucknell errors.
Quolas, Noad and Hayden each singled with one out to load the bases as the light rain began to come down heavier. Bucknell starter Dana Nielsen then struggled with her control, walking four straight batters to put Coastal ahead 4-2. Two more runs then came home on a dropped popup and a throwing error.
The Chanticleers then scored four more times in the fourth inning against Bison relievers. Noad led off with a double, Hayden walked and they moved to second and third on a foulout. Noad came home on a throwing error on a groundball off the bat of Dominik and Mellen followed with an RBI single to right. Taylor Harris added an RBI groundout and Mellen scored on a wild pitch to give CCU a 10-2 advantage.
Bucknell got two doubles in the top of the fifth to send the game to the bottom of the inning, but Coastal got the run back. Noad walked with one out, Hayden singled to left-center and Daneker singled to shallow center to load the bases. Kelsey Dominik then hit a flyball to center for the game-ending sacrifice fly.
After surrendering three hits in the first two innings, Quolas retired nine straight batters before back-to-back doubles in the fifth.
Against Sacred Heart, Coastal scored in each of their four turns at bat and hit four home runs among their seven total hits - with Noad, Dominik, Annie Robinson and Daneker each collecting one. Noad totaled four RBIs in the game, Quolas drove in two runs and Hayden went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Bri Chiusano started a two-run first inning for CCU as she walked and stole second. Mellen was then hit by a pitch and a double steal moved the runners to second and third. Two batters later, Noad plated Chiusano with a sacrifice fly and Hayden followed by singling off the left-field line to make it 2-0.
The Chanticleers then scored five runs on four hits - including a pair of homers - in the second. Dominik led off with an opposite-field shot to right, her second of the season. After a pair of walks and a wild pitch, Hayden hit an RBI single to center and Noad followed with a three-run blast to right-center, her third of the season.
Sacred Heart got on the board in the top of the third with a home run of its own, but Coastal came back to score three in the bottom of the inning. After Dominik walked, Robinson hit a two-run homer to left for her second of the season. A pair of walks and an illegal pitch followed and a sacrifice fly by Quolas made it 10-1.
Daneker's second homer of the year then capped the game's scoring in the fourth. Dominik pitched three innings to improve to 4-1 on the season. She allowed four hits, struck out three and walked none. Mackenzie Conrad pitched two hitless innings with two strikeouts to close it out.
Coastal concludes play in the tournament with two more games on Sunday, first taking on Boston College at 1:30 p.m., followed by a matchup against Murray State at 3:45 p.m.
